Nigeria undergoing major reset after subsidy removal — Soludo

By Abigail Philip David

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, stated that Nigeria is experiencing a profound transformation following the removal of subsidies by President Bola Tinubu. Speaking on Thursday at Veritas University’s 13th convocation lecture in Abuja, Soludo emphasized that the country is undergoing a significant and necessary reset.

The lecture, titled *”Let Us Make a New Deal for Nigeria,”* focused on addressing Nigeria’s current challenges and shaping a productive future. Soludo highlighted that subsidies, which primarily benefited the urban elite, have now been eliminated in the areas of fuel, foreign exchange, and electricity. This shift, he noted, signals a need to transition to a more equitable social contract that fosters opportunities for all Nigerians.

“We have entered a ‘muddling-through’ phase that requires careful navigation,” Soludo remarked, acknowledging that while Nigeria faces various challenges, there are also opportunities for substantial progress.

He drew a comparison to the United States’ Marshall Plan after World War II, urging Nigerian leaders to consider an ambitious national infrastructure plan that would include public works projects, financial reforms, and regulatory adjustments to drive development. According to Soludo, this approach could help steer the nation towards economic recovery and social renewal.

The governor also pointed to encouraging steps, such as minimum wage legislation, the draft tax reform bill, and planned cash transfers, as positive signs of progress. He called for unprecedented coordination between federal and state governments to ensure these reforms are implemented swiftly and effectively.

Speaking to the graduating students, Soludo encouraged them to actively shape Nigeria’s future, stating, *“The future you seek is in your hands. Only those who plan can control the future. While Nigeria may not have given you much, you are expected to give more than you have received.”*

He urged the students to be proactive in contributing to Nigeria’s transformation and to take an active role in crafting the nation’s path forward.
