Nigerian Bar Association Urges Tinubu to Declare State of Emergency on Insecurity

The Nigerian Bar Association has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency due to the widespread insecurity plaguing the nation. NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, made this call in Abuja, emphasizing the need for increased security investments without compromising Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Maikyau highlighted the dire consequences of insecurity, including displacement of citizens and destruction of businesses, leading to a loss of confidence in the government’s ability to address the situation effectively.

He urged the government to engage with the people transparently about security measures and prioritize the safety of Nigerians across all regions. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of addressing economic challenges and restoring confidence in the nation’s economy.

Furthermore, Maikyau expressed concerns about the Enhanced Trade Investment agreement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, vowing legal action if not reviewed to protect local businesses from unfair competition. He stressed the need for judicial clarification on the agreement’s propriety, indicating the NBA’s readiness to challenge it in court if necessary.
