NMA Agha Ndigbo, Celebrating the People’s General @ 70

By Okechukwu Keshi Ukegbu

In the words of Martin Luther King, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michaelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry.” This philosophy embodies the life of Distinguished Senator Enyi Abaribe, who, at 70, has tirelessly served the people of Abia State and Nigeria.

Senator Abaribe’s journey to success has been marked by resilience, intellectual brilliance, and unwavering determination. From his academic achievements at Government College, Umuahia to his MSc in Economics at the University of Benin, he consistently demonstrated a passion for learning. He first ventured into teaching before making his mark in the corporate world, holding significant positions in companies like SCOA Nigeria Plc and NICON.

Abaribe’s political journey began in 1999, where he served as Deputy Governor of Abia State under Governor Orji Uzor Kalu. Despite enduring three impeachment attempts, he rose above the challenges and resigned in 2003 to run for Governor, creating the Otuonu Movement, which swept across Abia State. Although his gubernatorial bid was unsuccessful, he remained steadfast in serving the people.

In the Senate, Abaribe’s leadership was undeniable. He held prominent positions such as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information, Chairman of Senate Committee on Power, and Minority Leader. He played an instrumental role in the “Doctrine of Necessity” that resolved the political impasse during the illness of President Yar’adua.

His efforts to support Nigerian-made products, especially through the Made in Aba Trade Fair, earned him the title “Made In Aba Senator.” His commitment to local economic growth continues to inspire both the Abia State Government and the nation.

Abaribe has also been recognized for his commitment to education and was appointed Chairman of the Nigerian Institute for Educational Policy and Administration. His work has earned him several chieftaincy titles, including MMA Agha Ndigbo, and recognition from various groups.

At 70, Senator Abaribe remains a beacon of inspiration, known for his visionary leadership, community service, and commitment to nation-building. He is a proud father of three, a grandfather, and a passionate soccer fan.

Join us as we celebrate the life and achievements of the People’s General at 70.
