The Abia State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has praised Governor Alex Otti for approving the full implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for doctors employed in the state.
In a statement released on Wednesday in Umuahia, NMA Chairman Dr. Ezinwa Ezuruike described the April 29 approval as a landmark decision that restores long-overdue pay parity for doctors working under the state government.
Ezuruike highlighted the move as a testament to Governor Otti’s dedication to strengthening Abia’s health sector and improving the welfare of medical professionals.
“By aligning Abia’s salary structure with the federal CONMESS, Governor Otti has shown visionary leadership and a clear appreciation of the vital role healthcare workers play in society,” the statement read.
The association also commended the government’s recent approval to recruit 771 new health workers across various professional categories, calling it a strategic and timely investment in human capital.
“This bold initiative is a significant step towards revitalising the state’s healthcare system. We view it not only as a fulfillment of a promise but as a call to greater dedication and excellence in our service to the people of Abia,” Ezuruike added.
The NMA also expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Ngozi Azodo, and other key stakeholders for their roles in making the development possible.
