No Appointment of Acting Army Chief Announced, Clarifies DHQ

By  Milcah   Tanimu

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially stated that no appointment for an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) exists within the Armed Forces of Nigeria. This announcement came from Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, on Monday in Abuja.

Furthermore, Gusau clarified that the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, had recently spoken with the COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. According to him, the Chief of Army Staff is currently on a well-deserved rest as part of his 2024 annual leave.

In addition, Gusau emphasized the professional management of the armed forces, stating that all Service Chiefs are diligently performing their constitutional duties. He noted that Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is providing routine briefs to the COAS in accordance with standard military procedures.

Consequently, the DHQ urged individuals spreading unfounded rumors to cease immediately. “The COAS is hale and hearty and will soon resume normal duties at the end of his leave,” Gusau affirmed.

Moreover, he advised media organizations to verify information with appropriate authorities before releasing potentially misleading news to the public. The defence spokesman also warned those advocating for a military takeover, noting that such actions are treasonable under the Constitution.

In closing, he reiterated that the armed forces remain steadfastly committed to preserving and advancing democracy in Nigeria, affirming their loyalty to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. “The military remains focused on achieving its statutory responsibilities of protecting the nation’s integrity,” he added.

Lastly, Gusau expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support and prayers, assuring them that victory is assured as the armed forces continue to uphold their responsibilities.
