NUT Frowns At #6,000 Monthly Salary For Primary

From Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

The newly elected Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Kogi State Council, Comrade Joel Salifu has demanded an immediate reinstatement of full salary payment as against the percentage payment to primary school teachers in the state.

Comrade Joel Salifu who frowned at the low percentage salary for teachers during the inauguration of the new officials at the union secretariat in Lokoja described the current situation where some of their members received N6,000 as monthly salary as ‘very ridiculous’.

It said, “There is uncertainty in the amount paid to teachers in Kogi State as the take home is grossly below any approved minimum wage either by former or present government while other entitlements have become elusive.”

The union leader, who lamented that primary school teachers in Kogi State receive peanuts in the name of salaries, pleaded with the authorities both at the federal and state levels responsible for teachers’ salaries to redress the embarrassing situation.

He called on teachers to set aside ethnic, religious and sectional considerations and unite to struggle for a just course that would cater for their wellbeing.
