NYG 2024: Imo Targets 20 Medals – Sports Commissioner

By Anne Azuka

Asaba – Imo State Commissioner for Sports, Obinna Onyeocha, expressed confidence on Sunday that the state will win at least 20 medals at the ongoing National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State.

Onyeocha made the prediction during an interview with journalists regarding the state’s preparation and current performance at the games held at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

He noted that Governor Hope Uzodimma had committed significant resources and fully paid the allowances owed to athletes and officials for the event.

Expressing confidence in the athletes’ potential, the commissioner announced that all medalists from the games would undergo further training, supported by the state government.

“So far, our athletes have won one gold, one silver, and about three bronze medals,” Onyeocha stated.

“I’m confident we will secure more, and by the end of the tournament, I am sure Imo will return home with no fewer than 20 medals.”

The commissioner also mentioned that Governor Uzodimma had given clear directives on developing Imo’s sports talent post-games. “Right after these games, we’ll select the champions among our athletes for further development,” Onyeocha added.

He dismissed rumors that some athletes had been abandoned, clarifying that Imo brought a full contingent of about 400 people to the games in Asaba.

“No athlete was left behind. We brought one of the largest delegations, so how could anyone claim athletes were abandoned in Imo? We’re here with both the male and female football teams, and our athletes are competing in about 31 different events. Imo is fully represented, with around 300 athletes and close to 100 officials,” he explained.

Onyeocha emphasized that Imo State continues to lead in sports in the Southeast, affirming the government’s commitment to further developing sports in the region.
