Ododo Urges Nigerian Army to Be Proactive, Focused at 12 Brigade WASA in Kogi

From Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has urged the Nigerian Army to remain proactive, focused, and resilient in carrying out its constitutional responsibility of safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and internal security. The governor gave the charge at the 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) celebration of the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, held over the weekend at Chari Maigumeri Barracks, Lokoja, where he served as Special Guest of Honour.

Governor Ododo acknowledged the sacrifices made daily by officers and soldiers in combating insecurity, banditry, and other threats, particularly in Kogi State and across the country. He assured the Army of his administration’s continued support to enhance troop welfare and operational effectiveness.“

We recognise the sacrifices you make daily to safeguard Kogi State and the nation against insecurity and other threats,” the governor said. “Under my administration, we will continue to provide the necessary support to strengthen your welfare and operational efficiency.”The governor commended the leadership and personnel of the 12 Brigade for their sustained efforts in ensuring peace and security in Kogi State. He also praised the Nigerian Army for preserving and promoting Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage through the annual WASA celebration.

Represented at the event by the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara, Governor Ododo stressed the importance of allowing troops time to relax and celebrate their achievements with their families after a demanding year of service.“ It is essential that troops are given the opportunity to unwind, share in the joy of the season, and celebrate the achievements of the year with their loved ones,” Omodara said on behalf of the governor.

He described the WASA as a symbol of unity, noting that it reflects the peaceful coexistence of Nigeria’s diverse cultures, languages, and traditions within the armed forces, all working toward a common national purpose. According to him, the WASA tradition dates back to the era of the West African Frontier Force, the precursor to the Nigerian Army, and was introduced to promote unity, camaraderie, and mutual understanding among troops and their families.Earlier, in his welcome address, the Commander of the 12 Brigade, Brigadier-General Kasim Umar Sidi, commended the officers and soldiers of the brigade for their discipline, professionalism, and dedication throughout the year.

He described the WASA as an annual tradition that provides an opportunity to showcase diversity, strengthen bonds, and reinforce the sense of family within the Army.“This celebration reminds us that beyond our uniforms, we are one family united by service to our nation,” Brig.-Gen. Sidi said.He also expressed appreciation to Governor Ododo and the people of Kogi State for their consistent support and cooperation with the Nigerian Army, describing the relationship as cordial and invaluable to the brigade’s operations. The event featured cultural displays, music, and other activities reflecting Nigeria’s rich ethnic diversity, reinforcing the Army’s commitment to unity, discipline, and national service.
