Ogun State Court Dismisses Suit to Delay LG Election

The Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has dismissed a suit by 16 political parties seeking to delay the local government election set for November 16. The political parties argued that the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) scheduled the election date without consulting them.

Justice T.A. Okunsokan ruled that neither constitutional law nor electoral law mandates OGSIEC to consult political parties before setting election dates. The court also rejected the parties’ argument that the election date should be postponed due to its overlap with the Ondo State governorship election, emphasizing that each state’s elections are independently regulated.
