In a swift response to the ongoing political developments in Ondo State, the House of Assembly is convening an emergency plenary session today to address the pressing issue of the state’s leadership vacuum. Reliable sources suggest that lawmakers may deliberate on declaring Deputy Governor Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the acting governor. This move comes in light of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s prolonged absence due to health reasons, with the governor currently recuperating at his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Reports indicate a potential disagreement among lawmakers regarding Aiyedatiwa’s suitability for the role, and it’s anticipated that not all legislators may be present at today’s session due to these divisions. However, it is confirmed that the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has given its consent for the emergency meeting.
A source close to the matter shared, “The lawmakers are ready to meet today (Friday). One of the agenda items is the declaration of Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the acting governor. Although some lawmakers may not support Aiyedatiwa’s appointment, the national leadership of the APC is aware and has approved the meeting. So, they may declare Aiyedatiwa as acting governor today.”
The Assembly’s spokesperson commented, “What I can tell you for now is that there is something like that, not to declare him (Aiyedatiwa) but the House is going to sit on the matter and review the political situation today as directed by our national leaders. The House has likely made the declaration, but not under must. I don’t want to preempt what the outcome of the meeting would be. If it is likely to happen, you are invited as well.”
In an additional development, it has been learned that President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to meet with Assembly members today in Abuja to address the ongoing crisis. Further details will be provided as the situation unfolds.
