The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as its new Acting National Chairman. This decision follows the suspension of Amb. Illiya Damagum, who previously held the position, by a faction within the party.
Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, confirmed the appointment. He stated in a press release:
“Appointment of Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as PDP Acting National Chairman”
“Following the suspension of His Excellency, Amb. Illiya Damagum as the Acting National Chairman of our great Party, the National Working Committee (NWC) has approved the appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the Acting National Chairman.
This appointment takes immediate effect and is in line with the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017). The NWC urges all organs, leaders, stakeholders, and members of our party to remain focused during this critical time, especially as we prepare for the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024.”
Meanwhile, the Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the NEC and the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party from removing Damagum as the Acting National Chairman. Justice Peter Lifu ruled on Friday that, according to Articles 42, 47, and 67 of the PDP Constitution, national officers can only be elected during the party’s national convention.
