Pension Backlog: Kano Governor Allocates Additional N5 Billion for Gratuity

By Jabiru Hassan, Kano

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to launch the third phase of pension payments, worth N5 billion, to ease the hardship faced by retirees due to unpaid benefits from the previous administration.

According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the flag-off ceremony will take place tomorrow at the Kano Government House.

Since taking office, Governor Yusuf’s administration has addressed N11 billion of the N43 billion backlog in outstanding pension payments. The payments have been implemented in two phases, with the third phase now underway.

During the first phase, N6 billion was allocated to the Kano State Pension Trust Fund to pay retirees below Grade Level 10. In the second phase, another N5 billion was released to compensate pensioners who served the state for 35 years.

Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to fully resolving the backlog, assuring retirees that they will receive their entitlements promptly. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with his administration’s campaign promise to prioritize the welfare of retirees and ensure their dignity in retirement.
