Plateau CSOs Urge Nentawe to Prioritize Performance, Integrity as Humanitarian Affairs Minister

By Israel Adamu, Jos

Following the recent appointment of Dr. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda as Minister-designate for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, the Plateau State Civil Society Organizations Forum has urged him to prioritize effectiveness and integrity in his new role.

In a statement signed by Forum Chairman Rev. Christopher Damcher and Secretary Dr. Mrs. Piwuna, the Forum emphasized that the ministerial role requires vigilance and diligence due to its strategic importance. The Forum noted that, given that previous ministers faced fraud allegations, Dr. Nentawe must exercise caution, technical expertise, and other essential qualities to restore trust and tackle issues within the ministry.

The Forum encouraged Dr. Nentawe to focus on addressing the humanitarian needs of Nigerians, particularly in Plateau State, where poverty and displacement are significant challenges. They emphasized that he should not lose sight of his core responsibilities in poverty reduction and humanitarian assistance.

“As representatives of civil society organizations working across various sectors in Plateau State, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda on his appointment. While such appointments are not often celebrated, the unique needs of Plateau, which has many displaced citizens facing inadequate support, warrant this recognition. We believe this role brings hope, especially for those affected by displacement and its repercussions on dignity and well-being,” the statement read.

The Forum praised Dr. Nentawe’s previous record, describing him as compassionate and committed to the development of Plateau State and Nigeria. They also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment, expressing hope that the cabinet reshuffle would lead to impactful changes in areas such as poverty, hunger, and crime reduction.

The statement further highlighted Plateau State’s selection as a pivotal ministry base, addressing both the region’s challenges and the pressing needs of its residents. It also noted that civil society efforts to assist displaced citizens, particularly women and children, have been hindered by limited funding and governmental support.

The Forum expressed trust in Dr. Nentawe’s integrity and urged him to avoid the corruption and pitfalls that marred previous administrations in the ministry. They expressed confidence that he could create a meaningful legacy focused on transforming lives rather than personal achievements.

“Dr. Nentawe has the potential to create a legacy of transformation that directly improves the lived realities of Nigerians. We look forward to hearing positive testimonies from those who benefit from his leadership,” the statement concluded.
