Plateau Remains Safe and Peaceful, PRG Replies Dalung

Published

By Israel Adamu, Jos

The Plateau Regeneration Group (PRG) has rejected recent comments attributed to former Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, alleging that highways in Plateau State are unsafe and that displaced communities have been involved in attacks on motorists.

The group described the claims as misleading, exaggerated and capable of creating unnecessary fear among residents, investors and visitors.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Pam Datiri, and made available to journalists on Sunday, the PRG said while citizens have the right to express opinions on national issues, such opinions should be based on verifiable facts and should not misrepresent the security situation in the state.

According to the group, although Plateau State, like many parts of Nigeria, has faced security challenges over the years, this does not justify portraying the state as generally unsafe for movement, business or investment.

The PRG stated that the administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang has adopted a multi-layered, community-based security strategy aimed at restoring and sustaining peace across the state.

It explained that the approach includes close collaboration with the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies through regular security meetings and joint operations.

The group further noted that the government has strengthened community policing initiatives by engaging traditional rulers, youth leaders and faith-based organisations to improve intelligence gathering and early warning mechanisms.

According to the statement, these efforts have enhanced rapid responses to security threats in several areas of the state.

The PRG also said the government has provided operational support to security agencies, including vehicles, communication equipment and surveillance resources, to improve their effectiveness.

In addition, it noted that peacebuilding programmes such as inter-community dialogue, conflict resolution initiatives and support for displaced persons have been intensified to address the underlying causes of insecurity.

While acknowledging that isolated attacks by criminal elements have occurred in some parts of the state, the group maintained that the government remains committed to protecting lives and property through sustained collaboration with security agencies.

It stressed that thousands of residents, traders, students and visitors travel on major highways across Plateau State daily without incident and cautioned against generalising isolated security breaches as the overall reality.

The group described Plateau as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful, scenic and hospitable states, adding that it continues to attract visitors, investors and tourists from across the country.

According to the PRG, the remarks attributed to Dalung do not reflect the experiences of many residents and could undermine ongoing efforts to promote peace and development in the state.

The group also expressed concern over claims linking displaced communities to attacks on highways, arguing that such allegations could stigmatise victims of violence who are still coping with the effects of displacement and trauma.

It warned that such narratives could undermine ongoing peacebuilding initiatives by government and security stakeholders.

The PRG urged political leaders and public commentators to exercise caution and ensure that public statements on security issues are factual, balanced and responsible.

It noted that unverified claims could create panic, discourage investment and negatively affect the image of Plateau State.

Reaffirming its confidence in the state’s security architecture, the group said Plateau remains peaceful, open and welcoming, with security agencies working continuously to safeguard lives and property.

The PRG called on residents and stakeholders to support ongoing efforts to consolidate peace and reject narratives capable of promoting fear and division.

By Aga Samuel Imoter, Jalingo

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has urged Christian leaders to defend truth, speak to political authorities when necessary and promote peace and moral values amid the social, economic and security challenges facing the country. Kefas made the call on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, while addressing participants at the Ministers’ Conference organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State Chapter, in Jalingo.

The conference, themed “The Church and the State: Partners in God’s Plan in a Changing World,” brought together Christian ministers and leaders to discuss the role of the Church in nation-building, peacebuilding and good governance. The governor said government and the Church have distinct constitutional and spiritual responsibilities but could collaborate in areas that promote peace, development and social stability.

He urged Christian leaders to uphold truth, compassion, justice and moral discipline while advising political authorities without allowing partisan interests to compromise the Church’s independence. “The Church must not become an extension of any political party,” Kefas said, urging ministers to provide constructive guidance and resist divisions based on politics, ethnicity or personal interests.

Kefas also called on religious leaders to use their platforms to discourage corruption, drug abuse, violence, hatred and injustice, while encouraging young people to pursue legitimate opportunities. He assured residents that his administration would continue to promote fairness, justice and peaceful coexistence while protecting citizens’ rights and freedom of worship.

The governor also expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with religious institutions in education, peacebuilding, community development and efforts to address drug abuse. He appealed to citizens and religious leaders to embrace unity and forgiveness, saying the development of Taraba required collective responsibility.
