Plateau Set to Host North-Central Public Hearing of Senate Constitution Review Committee

By Israel Adamu, Jos

The Plateau State Government has announced its readiness to host the North-Central Public Hearing of the Constitution Review Committee of the Nigerian Senate.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Pharmacist John Chun Ezekiel, Director of Liaison Directorate (NASS), Plateau State Government, Abuja, to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and made available to journalists in Jos on Sunday.

According to the statement, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, is pleased to inform the general public of the upcoming North-Central Public Hearing of the Constitution Review Committee, scheduled to hold on Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Crispan Hotel, Jos.

The committee is expected to receive presentations from various interest groups across the region on key thematic areas proposed for amendment in the ongoing constitutional review process.

Highlighted areas for review include, among others:

  • The creation of state police as a component of subnational security,
  • The proposed reorganization of the traditional council structure,
  • Reserved legislative seats—one each in the Senate and House of Representatives per state, and three exclusive seats for women in each State House of Assembly,
  • The role of traditional rulers in governance.

The statement encouraged active public participation, especially among women, noting that the process is critical to shaping the future of Nigeria’s democratic and institutional structure.

“We encourage women and members of the public to come out and actively participate in support of the constitutional review process,” the statement concluded.
