5 Everyday Foods That Can Be Poisonous If Not Handled Correctly

By  Milcah   Tanimu

Many beloved foods can be surprisingly dangerous if not prepared or consumed correctly. Here are five common foods that have hidden toxic risks:

1. Apples
While apples are a favorite fruit, their seeds contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide when broken down. Swallowing a few seeds is generally safe, but chewing them in large amounts can be harmful. Avoid eating apple seeds to eliminate any risk of cyanide poisoning.

2. Cherries
Cherries are enjoyed fresh or in desserts, but their pits contain amygdalin as well. Consuming large quantities of cherry pits can lead to cyanide poisoning. Ensure pits are removed before consuming cherries to avoid health risks.

3. Almonds
Sweet almonds are a safe snack, but bitter almonds, which contain high levels of amygdalin, can release cyanide in the body. Bitter almonds are not typically sold for consumption, but it’s crucial to differentiate them from sweet almonds to avoid poisoning.

4. Castor Oil
Castor oil, used in various remedies, is derived from castor seeds that contain ricin, a deadly toxin. The oil extraction process removes ricin, making castor oil safe to use. However, never attempt to extract oil from castor seeds at home due to the risk of ricin exposure.

5. Potatoes
Potatoes can become toxic when they turn green or sprout, due to a compound called solanine. Solanine can cause nausea and neurological problems. Store potatoes in a cool, dark place and avoid eating any that have sprouted or turned green.

Understanding these risks and proper handling can help prevent poisoning and keep you and your loved ones safe.
