The Zone 2 Police Command, situated in Onikan, Lagos, has apprehended a couple, along with a former soldier and a printer, on charges of producing counterfeit currencies.
As reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, the suspects, including the couple aged 50 and 46, were paraded at the command’s headquarters in Lagos on Friday.
Speaking on behalf of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing the zone, Mr. Olatoye Durosinmi, the Zonal Public Relations Officer, Tunni Ayuba, revealed that the printer’s arrest led to the apprehension of the couple and the ex-soldier.
Ayuba explained that the police team took action on February 3, raiding the printer’s hideout on Lagos Island and arresting him based on intelligence reports sanctioned by the AIG.
The spokesperson mentioned that during the operation, the police seized a printing machine purportedly utilized by the printer to produce security threads on fake currencies. Additionally, they recovered a sum of 300 million CFA and N9 million, suspected to be counterfeit, from the printer.
According to Ayuba, the printer confessed to engaging in currency counterfeiting for over three years and disclosed the identities of individuals he supplied with fake currencies for circulation.
“His confession led to the arrest of the couple, who are accomplices in the criminal activity,” she stated.
She further indicated that the couple’s admissions led to the apprehension of the former soldier, who was allegedly found in possession of suspected counterfeit local and foreign currencies during a search of his residence.
Ayuba emphasized that efforts are underway to capture other members of the syndicate who are currently at large.
