President Tinubu Pays Tribute to Iconic Artist Onyeka Onwenu

By Milcah Tanimu

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of Onyeka Onwenu, the renowned singer, songwriter, actor, journalist, activist, and politician.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu mourned the passing of the “Queen of Songs,” who passed away at the age of 72. Onwenu died on Tuesday night at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli, CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, where she had performed.

“President Tinubu mourns the passing of the Queen of Songs, whose edifying and mellifluous rendition of ‘One Love’ in the 1990s evoked a fervour of fellowship and harmony,” Ngelale stated.

The President also highlighted Onwenu’s significant contributions to public welfare through her music, notably her collaboration with King Sunny Ade on “Wait for Me,” a 1980s campaign for family planning.

“Ms. Onwenu lives on in her immortal masterpieces,” Tinubu said, celebrating her diverse and impactful career that brought joy to many.
