In a significant development, the outcome of a recent meeting between President Tinubu and ECOWAS President Abdulsalami, among other key figures, has come to light. The delegation led by Retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar, representing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), expressed confidence in achieving a peaceful resolution to the recent coup in Niger Republic. Stressing the importance of dialogue over military action, Abubakar shared insights with the press in Abuja following discussions held at the Presidential Villa, where President Tinubu, the current Chairman of ECOWAS, presided.

The meeting was attended by notable individuals including Dr. Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, and Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser. The focus of the meeting was the situation in Niger Republic, specifically engaging with the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and the leaders of the junta. Abubakar conveyed the stipulations outlined by the military regime led by Abdouramane Tchiani to ECOWAS, marking the initiation of formal communication between the regional organization and Niger’s military authorities.

Abubakar expressed his satisfaction with the progress achieved through his role as ECOWAS envoy, indicating his optimism that tangible outcomes would emerge from these diplomatic efforts. He stated, “Our visit to Niger has yielded productive discussions and has paved the way for ongoing dialogues. We’re hopeful for positive results.”

Regarding the differing viewpoints between ECOWAS and the leaders of the Niger coup regarding the timeline for reinstating democratic governance, Abubakar highlighted the start of constructive conversations. He elaborated, “We have entered into discussions, during which both sides have presented their perspectives. I have communicated these to the Chairman of the ECOWAS Heads of State and President. He will now consult with fellow leaders, and we anticipate making progress.”

In response to inquiries about the potential for military intervention, Abubakar emphasized the prioritization of diplomacy. He affirmed, “Diplomacy is our foremost approach, as no one stands to benefit from conflict. Our leaders are committed to exploring all avenues, and while challenges exist, we remain confident that a way out will be found.”

In summary, the recent meeting between President Tinubu and ECOWAS President Abdulsalami, alongside the presence of key dignitaries, has paved the way for promising diplomatic advancements. The focus on peaceful dialogue over military action underscores the collective commitment to achieving stability and a positive resolution to the current situation in Niger Republic.
