Protesters gathered at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja on Thursday, calling for the suspension of Professor Abayomi Fasina, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), over allegations of sexual harassment.
Holding placards with messages such as “Ekiti deserves better” and “Protect our women”, the demonstrators argued that Fasina should step aside while the allegations against him are investigated.
Victor Adetola, leader of the protest under the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations Against Corruption, submitted a petition to Education Minister Tunji Alausa, emphasizing the need for an independent inquiry.
“The case has been lingering for months without concrete action. Investigations must be thorough, and for that to happen, the VC must step down,” Adetola stated. He also alleged widespread corruption at FUOYE and criticized delays in disciplinary proceedings.
The allegations against Fasina stem from a leaked voice recording implicating him in a sexual harassment case involving a married assistant director at the university. Despite an ongoing internal investigation, protesters insist that his removal is necessary to ensure a fair and transparent process.
