We are all familiar with airline routine: “it is important to keep the seats upright, while the tray tables are stowed. Also, window shades must be up, while laptops are carefully put in the overhead bins and electronic devices are in flight mode.”
The first four, no doubt, are germane. Window shades are usually in upward position to enable us take cognisance of any emergency, such as fire. While tray tables should be stowed, seats must be in upright position to enable us to get out of the row as fast as possible. Laptops can become projectiles in an emergency, as the seat back pockets are not strong enough to contain them.
Is it important to set mobile phones in flight mode to forestall them from causing an emergency for the airplane? The answer to this question depends on individual respondent.
Technology has greatly advanced.
Aviation navigation and communication depend on radio services, coordinated since the 1920s to minimise any interference.
The current digital technology is far better and more advanced than analog technologies of 60 years ago. According to research, personal electronic devices emit a signal within the same frequency band as the aircraft’s communication and navigation systems, resulting in electromagnetic interference.
