Reps investigate agencies over lopsided recruitment

The House of Representatives on Wednesday mandated its Committees on Petroleum Upstream and Federal Character to investigate the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) and the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) over alleged lopsided recruitment exercises by the agencies.

The House urged NEITI and NUPRC to cancel the said recruitment exercises if found to have violated the Federal Character Principle.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Ibrahim Muhammed Hafiz Kawu on the need to probe the alleged lopsidedness in the recent recruitment exercises by NEITI and NUPRC.

The probe is coming two days after an alarm was raised that the South East got the lion’s share of allocation in the recent recruitment of 70 new staff by NEITI, 11 from South-West, 10 each from South-South and North Central, eight from North-West and seven from North East.

The lawmaker in his motion noted that NEITI and NUPRC are guided and regulated by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He also noted that the agencies are bound by law to comply with Federal Character Principle in all recruitments and employments.
