Safety Engineers Make inroad into Northern Nigeria

The Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (A Division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers) has inaugurated two news Chapters thus extending the frontiers of the institute to Kano and Imo states.

In Imo state, Engr Chidozie Okereke was sworn in as the Pioneer Imo State Chapter Chairman of NISafetyE last week at the Owerri Engineering Centre while a similar event was held in Kano where Engr Shamsudeen Dalhatsu was sworn in as the Pioneer Chairman in Kano State at the Capital City University Kano.

National Chairman of NISafetyE Engr Akaninyene Ekong while swearing in the pioneer chairmen advised them on the need to work as a team , engage the Government constructively and proffer safety engineering solutions to ensure both industrial and public safety.

Ekong further called on the new chapters to leverage on the approved Codes of Practice for Construction Safety issued by NISafetyE and other technical safety guidances on food and process safety.

The national chairman also urged them to create a synergy with the National body engage their various State Governments and to create a law to establish Safety Commissions to regulate , monitor and enforce compliance to safety.

COREN President Engr Prof Zubair spoke on the need to foster professionalism in the Engineering Profession through the various divisions while leveraging on Safety Engineering to be included in the Tertiary Educational Curriculum for Engineers , Technologist ,Technician and Craftsmen .

Zubair said that training and mandatory competency development would be carried out for all Engineers with Safety Engineering being an integral part of Engineers training modules and assured NISafetyE of working closely together to advance Engineering practice in Nigeria.

Highlights of the events were the inauguration of chapters , investiture of the new chairmen, induction of new members while in attendance were Group Captain Mfon Akpan of the Nigerian Airforce Kano and Engr M.B. Shehu, President -Elect World Federation of Engineering Organization.

Others were the Pioneer National Chairman NISafetyE Engr A.B. Oyedepo, the President Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria Professor Abubakar Sadiq Zubair , Professor Rabiu Magaji amongst other personalities that graced the event.
