SEC DG to Address Green Economy and Infrastructure Transformation at Oriental News Summit

Dr. Emomotimi Agama, the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), will be highlighting key policies and strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s national economy and promoting a green economy at the upcoming Oriental News Nigeria’s third National Conference. Scheduled for July 25, 2024, in Lagos, the conference is themed “Green Economy, Sustainable Growth, and Infrastructure Transformation.”

The conference will explore various sub-themes, including Green Finance, marketing, and supply chain strategies; policies for a green economy; renewable energy and ecosystem development; and digital economy entrepreneurship.

Dr. Agama emphasized the significant opportunities within the green economy, particularly in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, ecotourism, and coastal development.

Stakeholders also noted that Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging its natural resources could position the country as a leader in green economy development, making the conference theme particularly relevant.

Oriental News highlighted that global economic slowdowns driven by structural, global, and cyclical factors have threatened sustainable growth by contributing to environmental degradation and global warming. The shift to a green economy is seen as a way to enhance natural capital, protect the environment, and ensure social justice, offering practical tools for sustainable growth while reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.

However, transitioning to a green economy faces challenges, such as the lack of appropriate policy frameworks, insufficient capital expenditure, and varying levels of development and resource endowments. Addressing these challenges requires new business models, strategic changes, innovations in resource use, responsible business practices, and green technologies.

The conference will bring together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from across Nigeria for a plenary session to discuss the latest practices and policies for a green economy and sustainable growth. They aim to identify actionable priorities for stakeholders to pursue the most promising policies and practices.

Organized by Oriental News Nigeria, a digital media platform, the conference will gather key policymakers, government and non-governmental organizations, and industry experts from Nigeria’s financial sector to discuss the Green Economy Initiative.
