Security: Akwa Ibom Donates 14 Gunboats to Army

By Ogenyi Ogenyi, Uyo

The Akwa Ibom State Government has donated 14 patrol boats to the Nigerian Army to enhance military surveillance in the state’s waterways. Governor Umo Eno stated that the donation is intended to strengthen the existing partnership in addressing criminal activities in the Niger Delta region. The boats will be equipped with machine guns, and military personnel will be designated to operate them.

Governor Eno made this announcement during his meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who was on a working tour of military formations and units under the Nigerian Army 6 Division in Uyo over the weekend.

The Governor commended the Nigerian Army for its dedication and collaborative efforts with other security agencies to maintain the state’s safety. He highlighted his establishment of the Ministry of Internal Security, headed by a retired Army General, as a testament to his administration’s prioritization of security. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working with the Chief of Army Staff and collaborating on other areas of mutual interest to ensure peace and stability in the state and the nation at large.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja explained that his tour of military formations in the region was to assess their locations, activities, and readiness for required operations. He expressed gratitude for the support of the State Government to the Nigerian Army’s 2 Brigade stationed in the state and the 6 Division, which covers the South-South region. Having served as the Commander of the 2 Brigade in Uyo before becoming Nigeria’s 23rd Chief of Army Staff, he was familiar with the challenges faced by the state due to its unique location and pledged the Army’s commitment to collaborate with the state government in addressing these challenges.
