SELI Donates Educational Playgrounds, Trains 150 Teachers in Jos North LGA

By  Israel Adamu, Jos

The Star Education and Leadership Initiative (SELI) has donated child-friendly educational playground facilities to Akanang Private School and LEA Primary School Kyan Rikkos in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State. These playgrounds aim to support cognitive development and enhance learning abilities among pupils.

Our correspondent reports that SELI also trained around 150 teachers in the state on the theme “Promoting Learning through Eduplay.”

The playgrounds are equipped with various child-friendly facilities, including colorful tire rails, monkey ladders, slides, seesaws, tire calculators, rockets, and swings. These additions have already brought a vibrant energy to the schools, sparking excitement among the students.

Founder of SELI, Esther Onyinyechi Mark, who commissioned the playgrounds, expressed her commitment to encouraging school attendance. “We donated these educational playgrounds to motivate children to attend school,” she stated.

“We are determined to ensure that all children are in school, as this will reduce the number of out-of-school children,” Esther added, explaining that play is an essential aspect of learning, helping children think creatively and regulate their emotions.

She further highlighted that “play is a powerful tool for children’s language development, and educational playgrounds are essential for holistic development. They combine learning and play, creating an environment where children can explore, discover, and grow. Through interactive play, children develop cognitive skills, problem-solving abilities, and social competence.”

Esther emphasized SELI’s commitment to empowering Nigerian children and preparing them for the future. “Many children face vulnerabilities at home and school, and a lack of structured play can overburden a child’s spirit,” she said.

“Investing in educational playgrounds means investing in a brighter future. Every child deserves access to spaces where they can learn, dream, and achieve. This project is supported by the Reciprocal Exchange Component of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, a program of the U.S. Department of State,” she added.

The schools’ authorities expressed deep gratitude for SELI’s initiative. Mrs. Stella Akene, head teacher of Akanang Private School, praised SELI for addressing a vital need for the children. She remarked that the pupils will remember SELI’s contribution and that the facilities will greatly aid their development.

Mrs. Sarah Agok Garba, proprietor of Akanang Private School, noted that the playground’s impact was immediate and heartwarming. Students, who previously spent breaks in a dull environment, now eagerly flock to the playground, filled with joy and enthusiasm. Teachers observed that the children return to class more focused and ready to learn after engaging in active play, enhancing both their physical fitness and overall school experience.
