Senate Holds Closed-Door Meeting with Wike and FCT CP on Insecurity

Must read

The Senate is currently in a closed-door meeting with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igwe, to address the escalating insecurity in the nation’s capital.

During Wednesday’s plenary session, the Senate unanimously agreed to postpone the first order of the day to allow for the private session with Wike and the FCT CP. The decision was made in a Committee of the Whole, following a motion moved by Deputy Senate Leader, Oyelola Ashiru, and seconded by the Minority Leader.

Ashiru stated, “The minister and the commissioner will brief us on the modalities of security in the FCT.”

This meeting comes after the Senate summoned Wike and the Commissioner of Police on February 28 over the tragic murder of Chris Agidy, an aide to Senator Ned Nwoko, by kidnappers. The Senate’s resolution was prompted by a motion sponsored by Senator Nwoko regarding the kidnapping and killing of his senior legislative assistant, Agidy, along with 19 others in the Galadimawa area of Abuja in November 2023.

The Senate’s engagement with key stakeholders underscores its commitment to addressing the rising incidents of kidnapping and insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory.
