Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, has called on the newly elected leadership of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) to prioritize unity, peace, and collective development across the Urhobo nation.
He made the appeal during the 94th Urhobo Day Celebration held at Uvwiamuge, Agbarho, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. This year’s event, themed “Awaken Urhobo Spirit for Unity,” drew stakeholders from across Urhobo communities, all reaffirming their commitment to cultural preservation and progress.
Addressing the gathering, Senator Dafinone stressed that the new UPU administration must work diligently to strengthen bonds among Urhobos, foster harmony, and drive initiatives that uplift the socio-cultural and developmental landscape of the region. He emphasized that unity is the foundation for lasting growth and prosperity.
Senator Dafinone congratulated the re-elected President-General of the UPU, Chief Ese Gam Owe, and his executive council, noting their renewed mandate as a reflection of the Urhobo people’s trust and confidence. He encouraged the leadership to build on past achievements and pursue an inclusive, coordinated approach to governance.
Highlighting his commitment to Urhobo culture, the senator reaffirmed his support for initiatives that promote the heritage of the people. He cited the annual Urhobo Language Competition, which he sponsors in memory of the late Senator Pius Ewherido, as an example of efforts inspiring young Urhobos to embrace and preserve their mother tongue.
Reflecting on the historic significance of the UPU, Senator Dafinone commended the union’s 94-year journey, marked by purposeful leadership, courage, and a spirit of unity. He urged that these values continue to guide the union as it navigates modern challenges and opportunities for development.
The 2025 Annual Congress, held alongside the celebration, saw the dissolution of the outgoing executive council and the election of new leaders. Chief Owe’s re-election as President-General symbolized continuity, stability, and renewed commitment to advancing the Urhobo cause.
