Severe Flooding Hits Northern Sudan, Leaving Dozens Dead and Thousands Homeless

Must read

Northern Sudan is reeling from catastrophic flooding that has resulted in numerous fatalities and left thousands homeless. The deluge, triggered by heavy rains, has exacerbated an already dire displacement crisis in the region. According to Qureshi Hussein, spokesperson for the Sudanese Civil Defence, the flooding has claimed 31 lives across northern Sudan.

The floods have further strained the country, which has been grappling with a major displacement crisis due to ongoing conflict. Affected areas now see residents, like Yassin Abdul Wahab, struggling to find shelter. “People are sleeping in the streets, and the situation is very bad,” Wahab reported. Efforts are underway to build temporary shelters from the remnants of destroyed homes.

Since August, the flooding has impacted over 317,000 individuals, displacing approximately 118,000 people. This disaster compounds the already severe displacement crisis that has persisted for nearly 500 days, following the outbreak of conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
