Vice President Kashim Shettima has criticised the online membership registration process of the African Democratic Congress, alleging that the platform was flooded with fake identities.
Shettima made the remarks on Wednesday during an interfaith Ramadan fast-breaking hosted by President Bola Tinubu and attended by federal ministers and other officials.
The vice president said the opposition party’s registration portal was overwhelmed by fictitious names and identities shortly after it launched the exercise nationwide on March 1 ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to him, the development raised questions about the party’s long-standing advocacy for electronic transmission of election results.
“The same party that insisted on electronic transmission of votes opened its membership portal and it was overwhelmed by fake names and fictitious identities,” Shettima said.
The ADC had earlier announced the commencement of online membership registration in compliance with the amended Electoral Act and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission, directing existing members to update and revalidate their details.
The party later acknowledged irregular entries on the platform and said it had corrected the anomalies following reports of fake registrations.
Shettima also urged political officeholders to defend the policies and achievements of the current administration as the next election cycle approaches, adding that the ruling All Progressives Congress is in a stronger political position than it was during the 2023 elections.
He further dismissed claims that state governors were being pressured to defect to the APC.
