“Shettima Supports APC Strategy: Endorses Akpabio and Barau for Senate Presidency”

“Vice President-elect Shettima Endorses APC’s Senate Leadership Plan, Backs Akpabio and Barau for Key Roles”

Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima has expressed his approval of the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) leadership zoning plan for the 10th National Assembly. During a meeting in Abuja, Shettima endorsed Godswill Akpabio as President of the Senate and Jibrin Barau as Deputy President of the Senate. He emphasized that this selection would contribute to stability in Nigeria. The endorsement came as Akpabio, Barau, and more than 70 senators-elect visited Shettima.

Shettima Supports Unity in Politics, Backs Christian Representation in Senate Leadership

Kashim Shettima, a serving member of the Senate, emphasized the importance of politics as a unifying force rather than a divisive one. He highlighted the need for unity and stability in Nigeria, stating that the next Senate leadership position should be given to the Christian faith. Shettima expressed concerns that failing to do so could be seen as validating allegations of an Islamisation agenda within the APC-led administration.

He praised the decision of the party leadership to select Senator Godswill Akpabio, a Christian, for a prominent position, considering it a step towards unity. Shettima acknowledged the support received from Christian supporters and emphasized the significance of a stable and united nation before political considerations.

Furthermore, Shettima revealed his intention to engage with other aspirants for the Senate presidency who may have reservations about the APC’s choices, in order to address their grievances.

“Shettima Commends Bipartisan Unity and Acknowledges Governors’ Support”

Senator Abdulaziz Yari, a close associate of Kashim Shettima, was praised by the Vice President-elect for their shared journey as governors from 2011 to 2019 under the same political platform. However, Shettima emphasized that the interests of the nation supersede personal affiliations. He expressed satisfaction with the display of bipartisan unity among those who prioritize the stability and unity of Nigeria.

Furthermore, Shettima extended his gratitude to Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and David Umahi of Ebonyi State for their contributions and support to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He described Governor Wike as a man of honor and integrity, known for his transparent and straightforward nature.

“Shettima Acknowledges Contributions of Governors and Pledges Inclusivity”

Kashim Shettima expressed admiration for the immense contributions made by Governor David Umahi, highlighting him as the best-performing governor in the South-East and emphasizing his integrity and honor. Shettima also noted that Umahi, despite his aspirations for the Senate leadership, respected the party’s decision and dropped his candidacy.

Shettima further assured that efforts would be made to engage with those who have yet to join their cause, aiming to demonstrate the importance and benefits of aligning with their vision. He mentioned Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a seasoned politician, as someone who possesses the expertise to bring these individuals on board before the National Assembly’s inauguration.

Godswill Akpabio, in his response, highlighted the diverse political backgrounds of members in his support group, emphasizing their collective commitment to creating stable leadership for the 10th Senate in order to promote stability in Nigeria.

Akpabio Emphasizes National Cohesion and Stability in Senate Leadership

Godswill Akpabio, speaking on behalf of the Stability Group, highlighted their commitment to the success of the Tinubu-Shettima administration, considering it synonymous with the success of Nigeria as a whole. He emphasized that once individuals assume the role of a Senator, they represent the entire nation rather than a specific political party.

Akpabio further explained that the Stability Group was formed not solely due to the party’s zoning decision but with the purpose of promoting national cohesion and political stability. Their primary objective is to collaborate with the incoming administration to evaluate policies and ensure the overall stability of the country.

As the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly approaches on June 13, various pressure groups consisting of intra and inter-party alliances have emerged within the House. The APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) had previously released a zoning formula on May 8, 2023, which assigned Godswill Akpabio as President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau as Deputy President of the Senate, Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker, and Benjamin Kalu as Deputy Speaker.
