Sokoto Magistrate Court Remands Suspect for Allegedly Accusing Governor’s Wife of Currency Spraying

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

On Monday, Magistrate Court 1 in Sokoto, presided over by Chief Magistrate Fati Hassan, ordered the remand of Shafi’u Umar Tureta for allegedly circulating a video of Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s wife spraying money during her birthday celebration.

The defense lawyer, Barrister Almustapha Yusuf Abubakar, explained that Shafi’u was charged with two offenses: spreading a video that allegedly shows the governor’s wife spraying currency while others are struggling with hunger, and sharing a credential supposedly belonging to the governor that displays an F9 result. The defense also noted that no one has disputed the authenticity of the credential.

Barrister Almustapha mentioned that the court has scheduled the next hearing for September 6, 2024. He added that the court might decide on that date whether to grant bail, considering the accused has denied the allegations.

According to a reliable source, if the suspect is found guilty, he could face up to six months imprisonment or a fine.
