In response to the escalating cost of food and essential commodities due to Nigeria’s economic challenges, the Sokoto State Government is set to offer relief through the establishment of discount outlets, known as “Sauki Shops.” These cooperative shops are designed to help workers and retirees purchase goods at lower prices, reducing market costs and curbing price manipulation by traders and suppliers.

Tackling Inflation and Ensuring Affordability
The “Sauki Shops” initiative is a strategic effort to provide workers with essential household supplies at reduced rates, aiming to ease the economic burden caused by inflation. Economic downturns often result in soaring inflation, making it increasingly difficult for low-income families to make ends meet. The purchasing power of workers is eroded, leaving them unable to cover their families’ basic needs, and many find themselves sinking further into debt.
The establishment of these cooperative shops is an essential measure to combat inflation and alleviate poverty, offering a more affordable way for workers to access essential commodities. By improving workers’ access to affordable food items, the initiative helps stabilize their lives, enabling them to allocate resources to other vital needs like healthcare and education. This, in turn, promotes better financial planning and improves overall well-being.

Historical Context and Strategic Vision
This initiative is reminiscent of similar schemes in the 1970s and 1980s under the Sokoto State Supply Company (SOSCO) and Sokoto Cooperatives. Both programs offered affordable and subsidized commodities to workers, ensuring price uniformity across rural and urban centers. However, the previous schemes collapsed due to issues such as mismanagement, corruption, and pilfering.
With the lessons learned from the past, the renewed initiative has been designed with safeguards in place to prevent abuse and ensure sustainability. The new scheme will begin in six local government areas, with plans for future expansion. It will initially serve workers and retirees, and payments will be processed entirely cashless using dedicated cards linked to workers’ monthly salaries. The maximum transaction per individual is capped at N15,000.
Collaborative Efforts for Success
This initiative was conceived by Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as part of his commitment to alleviating the economic hardship of Sokoto’s people. Working closely with Dr. Aminu Aminu Bizi, CEO of Bizi Mobile, the government finalized the technical and administrative details for the scheme’s implementation.
The Committee on Sales and Distribution of Food and Commodities, chaired by former Deputy Governor Alhaji Chiso Abdullahi, is overseeing the program’s execution. The committee also conducted a study tour of states like Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa, where similar projects have been successfully launched.
Training and Implementation
The program’s success is heavily reliant on the training of key personnel, a priority that was immediately addressed. According to Dr. Aminu, personnel have undergone extensive training to ensure optimal implementation. He emphasized the importance of strict adherence to guidelines, warning that misuse of the cards, such as proxy purchases, will not be tolerated.
Eligible beneficiaries will soon be able to register, but individuals with outstanding bank loans must settle their debts before qualifying for the program. The government is collaborating with relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Finance, to ensure transparency and smooth implementation.
A Vision for a Stronger Workforce
This initiative represents a long-term commitment by the Sokoto State Government to protect workers from market exploitation, ensuring that their incomes can stretch further. By easing the financial burdens of workers, the program aims to foster goodwill between the government and the working class, boosting morale and productivity across the state.
