Stop Destroying Sneakers by Cleaning with Detergent – Use These Instead

By  Milcah   Tanimu

Sneakers are the go-to casual shoes for comfort, but they can get dirty quickly. While cleaning is essential, using the wrong products can damage your sneakers. Detergent, commonly used for laundry, is one of the worst offenders. Here’s why you should stop using detergent and the best alternatives for sneaker care.

**Why You Should Avoid Using Detergent on Sneakers**

1. **Harsh Ingredients:**
Detergents are designed for fabrics, not sneakers. The strong chemicals can break down the materials used in your sneakers, causing damage over time.

2. **Residue Buildup:**
Detergents are difficult to rinse out completely, leaving residue behind. This residue attracts dirt and grime, making your sneakers dirtier faster after cleaning.

3. **Material Damage:**
The harshness of detergents can strip away protective coatings, causing sneakers to discolor, crack, and deteriorate.

4. **Colour Fading:**
Brightly colored sneakers are especially at risk. Detergents can cause fading, leading to dull and lifeless colors.

5. **Loss of Shape:**
The glue and stitching that hold your sneakers together can be weakened by detergent, potentially altering the shape and structure of your shoes.

**Best Alternatives for Cleaning Sneakers**

1. **Baking Soda:**
To eliminate odors and stubborn stains, mix baking soda with water to create a paste. Apply it with a soft brush or toothbrush to gently scrub your sneakers.

2. **White Vinegar:**
White vinegar is ideal for cleaning white sneakers. A vinegar and water solution can brighten them and remove stubborn stains.

3. **Hydrogen Peroxide:**
Diluted hydrogen peroxide can help brighten colors and tackle tough stains without damaging the material.
