Suspect Accused of Killing Ekiti Monarchs Remanded in Custody

Following his alleged involvement in the killing of two traditional rulers in Ekiti State, a 25-year-old man, Babuga Lede, has been remanded in the correctional center by an Ekiti State Magistrate’s Court.

The victims, Oba David Ogunsakin, the Elesun of Esun Ekiti, and Oba Samuel Olusola, the Olumojo of Imojo Ekiti, were ambushed and killed by gunmen while traveling along Oke Ako-Irele Road on January 29. A third colleague, Oba Sunday Fatoba, the Alara of Ara (Ikole), narrowly escaped the attack.

During the arraignment on Tuesday, police prosecutor Yomi Osuolale informed the court of the suspicion surrounding the defendant’s involvement in the crimes.

Osuolale stated, “The defendant is reasonably suspected to have committed an offence of conspiracy to kidnap, attempt to murder, and murder of Oba David Babatunde Ogunsakin and Oba Samuel Olatunde Ishola.”

He added, “The defendant also attempted to kidnap Oba Samuel Adebayo Fatoba and Bamidele Ibikunle Joseph (driver).”

The charges brought against the defendant are punishable under sections 280, 241, and 234 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021.

The suspect was apprehended in Ikole Ekiti on January 29 with weapons in his possession. The case file has been sent to the Ekiti State Director of Public Prosecution for legal guidance.

Magistrate Olubunmi Bamidele ordered the remand of the defendant at the Ado Ekiti Correctional Custody pending legal advice from the DPP. The case was adjourned till April 24 for further proceedings.
