Suspected Herdsmen on Monday night shot dead at least ten persons with several others sustaining injuries during an attack on the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, Camp at the Abagena in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State.
Day Break gathered that the attackers stormed the community at night yesterday when the Displaced Persons were deep asleep where they opened fire on them.
The Police Public Relation’s Officer, PPRO, Benue State Command, DSP, Sewuese Anene who confirmed the incident averred that the Command has deployed Police Officers to the scene of the attack to ascertain the casualties as well as damages caused.
Anene appealed to members of the public, particularly those within the Abagana community to remain calm, assuring that the Police were on top of the situation to fish out those behind the dasterdly act.
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom who visited the area today condemned the gruesome murder of innocent people. He described the attack as barbaric and unacceptable.
The Governor lamented that more than seventy people have been killed by herdsmen in few months across the state this year.
Ortom enjoined President Muhammadu Buhari to be alive to his responsibility of protecting lives and property of all Nigerians.
The Governor called on the President to as a matter of urgency convene security summit and address the nation on the state of insecurity in the country.
