Aviation Workers Terminates Strike As Firm Recalls Disengaged Workers

After hours of protest at the entrance gates of the Murtala Mohammed Airport 2 (MMA2) Terminal in Lagos State, aviation workers on Tuesday terminated their strike and vacated the gates for resumption of flight operations.

The aviation workers under the aegis of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) had on Tuesday morning blocked the MMA2 terminal gates, disrupting airport operations as airlines suspend flights.

The union protested the “unprovoked termination” of the appointment of 34 aviation workers by the operators of the airport terminal, the B-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL).

The union listed those affected by the disengagement to include ATSSSAN Branch Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Women Leader who were said to demand “the payment of terminal benefits to staff members who exited the service of the company lawfully in line with the signed Conditions of Service”.

However, hours after the protest, ATSSSAN General Secretary, Francis Akinjolie said BASL has recalled the disengaged workers.

“The strike that was embarked upon today against the Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited has been called off pursuant the acceptance by the company to recall the laid off members of our union and an undertaking to pay their salaries,” Akinjolie said in a statement late Tuesday.

According to him, the agreement was reached at a meeting empaneled by the Ministry of Labour and Employment; Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA); Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN); Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and airport security agencies.

Aviation Workers Embark on Nationwide Protest

Aviation workers are currently protesting across the country over an alleged ‘obnoxious’ legislation.

Aviation workers embark on nationwide protest

Ben Nnabue, President of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) told newsmen that the protest is simultaneously taking place in all the airports in the federation.

Nnabue who revealed that they are demanding the removal of a clause in an act establishing aviation agencies that seeks to prevent trade unions from protesting, gave the federal government a 14-day ultimatum for them to look into their demands, or see them embark on a full-blown strike that might possibly shutdown airport activities.

    He said;

“Sometime last year, we went to the national assembly to amend the act establishing the agencies, so that it would be more progressive. There was one obnoxious clause that talked about trade unions not going on strike.

“We were shocked that before they sent it to the president for assent, those clauses were maliciously inserted. So we have to fight for them to remove it. That’s the whole idea.

“It is a peaceful demonstration. It is after now and they didn’t hear us or didn’t look at our demands, then we get to the level of grounding the operations of airports,” he said.

“We have given government 14-days ultimatum to look at our demands, after which we now do what is called strike.”

The strike was planned to commence today but the workers made a u-turn on their plan after a Memorandum of Settlement reached by the workers and the Federal Ministry of Aviation in the early hours of Tuesday.

Both parties signed the agreement at the end of the meeting which was held at the instance of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

The meeting which was presided over by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, discussed the non-implementation of the Minimum Wage consequential adjustment in the aviation parastatals since 2019 and the non-approval/release of the reviewed conditions of service in the parastatals.

BREAKING: Aviation workers in Kaduna Airport, Embark on strike

    By Gabriel Udeh

Aviation workers will on Sunday shut down flight operations at the Kaduna Airport as the various aviation unions in the country jointly resolved to proceed on an industrial action till next week Friday.

The unions are: National Union Of Air Transport Employees, Association Of Nigeria Aviation Professionals and National Association Of Aircraft Pilots And Engineers.

In a letter jointly signed by the leaders of the three bodies, the workers said the strike was in consonance with the declaration by the Nigeria Labour Congress, Kaduna State Chapter, to embark on the action in protest over anti-labour practices perpetrated against civil servants by the Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led administration in the state.

The letter dated May 14, 2021 was titled, ‘Notice To All Aviation Workers – Total Shut Down Of Kaduna Airport’. It was jointly signed by NUATE General Secretary, Ocheme Aba; ANAP General Secretary, Rasaq Saidu; and NAAPE General Secretary, Umoh Ofonime.

The aviation unions further wrote the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Capt Hamisu Yadudu, officially informing him of the development.

The Kaduna Airport has both domestic and international wings and processes both local and international passengers.

The decision by the aviation workers will bring unbearable pains on the travelling public as the Kaduna Airport is a vital connecting gateway for Northern businessmen and the elite who avoid travelling by road as the Abuja-Kaduna Road has become kidnappers’ den of late.
