Beyoncé Makes History as First Black Woman to Top US Country Chart

    By Daniel Edu

Beyoncé has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first black woman to reach the number one spot on the US country chart with her single “Texas Hold ‘Em.” The song skyrocketed to the top after its surprise release, along with the single “16 Carriages,” during a Super Bowl announcement of her upcoming album, Renaissance Act II.

This achievement also makes Beyoncé the second solo female artist to debut at number one, following Taylor Swift in 2021 with her re-recordings of “Love Story” and “All Too Well.” Additionally, Beyoncé is the first woman to claim the number one position on both the Hot Country Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts since their inception in 1958.

Joining a select group of artists including Ray Charles, Billy Ray Cyrus, Justin Bieber, and Morgan Wallen, Beyoncé’s feat emphasizes her versatility and impact across different music genres. The chart positions, covering the week leading up to February 15, saw “Texas Hold ‘Em” downloaded 39,000 times and streamed 19.2 million times in the US within just four days of tracking.

Both “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages” will be featured on Beyoncé’s upcoming ninth studio album, Renaissance Act II, scheduled for release on March 29.

Country music, historically grappling with inclusion, witnessed an Oklahoma country radio station initially refusing to play “Texas Hold ‘Em.” This sparked a viral campaign on social media, drawing attention to the ongoing challenges faced by black musicians in the country genre. The incident resonates with previous controversies, such as the removal of rapper Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” from Billboard’s country chart in 2019, despite hitting number one.

Beyoncé’s groundbreaking achievement highlights the evolving landscape of the country music genre and underscores her influence as an artist capable of transcending musical boundaries.

Chioma Jesus Wins Beyonce in Online Popularity Contest

Nigerian gospel singer Chioma Jesus has achieved a new ‘feat’ after defeating American superstar Beyonce in a popularity poll on Twitter.

The poll was organized after a Twitter user @imoteda claimed that Beyonce is more popular than footballers. She added that it is weird for people to think otherwise.

    @imoteda tweeted;

So many people think football players are crazy popular. It’s so weird. Like how can you say a football player is more popular than Beyonce? Then name two football players than even I wouldn’t recognize. Lol

This claim was however countered by many Twitter users who are also football fans. Another Twitter user, @_Ganzii who joined the bants organized a poll between Chioma Jesus and Beyonce.

The gospel singer copped quite a big win in the poll as she garnered 85% percent of the 110,995 votes cast.

Kelly Rowland opens up on being under Beyonce’s shadow in Destiny’s Child

Kelly Rowland has said that it was overwhelming being in the shadows of Beyonce during their days in the defunct group Destiny’s Child.

The group which was formed in 1993 performed together before it was disbanded in 2006.

However, Kelly Rowland and Beyonce remained friends ever since.

Opening up during an appearance on The Voice Australia, Kelly said: “Can you imagine what it’s like being in a group with Beyonce?

“I would just torture myself in my head. Like, ‘I can’t wear this dress because they’re going to say it’s like B’.

“Or, ‘I can’t have a song like that because it sounds too much like B’.

“I would be lying if I said no, it’s never bothered me. That’s bull.

“There was a whole decade, if I am being completely honest, a decade where it was like the elephant in the room.

“It was the thing that would constantly be on my shoulder.”
