    BOSG Inaugurates 610 Taxis, Buses And Tricycles In Maiduguri Metropolis

    Borno Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has launched 610 taxis, tricycles and buses to enhance urban mass transportation in Maiduguri and parts of Jere and Konduga Local Government Areas which fall under the metropolis.

    Zulum arrived Maiduguri after his presidential press briefing in Abuja today, Thursday, and drove from
    the airport to Ramat Square in Maiduguri, where he launched 610 means of transportation which combine 100 Toyota LE cars for city taxis, 500 tricycles popularly known as ‘Keke NAPEP’ and 10 Ashok Leyland buses each with capacity for 41 passengers.

    While the 10 buses were left under the custody of Borno Express Transport Corporation for intracity services, the 500 tricycles were allocated to 2000 operators with each tricycle owned by a group of four unemployed persons. The 100 taxis were also allocated to 200 persons with each to be owned by two, making a total of 2,200, the number of persons who benefited from the tricycles and taxis.

    Modalities for the distribution were arrived at after Governor Zulum held meetings with leaders of different associations of Keke NAPEP operators who informed the governor that some of their members form groups to own tricycles and they have their ways of jointly managing them and sharing profits.

    Before Zulum’s launch, the State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Abubakar Tijjani, assured the governor of effective and efficient supervision to ensure functional deployment to routes in line with the governor’s goal of increasing access to mass transport in the metropolis.

    On security integrated into the tricycles and taxis, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Bexil Computers & Communications, Yusuf
    Hayatuddeen, said each of the 500 tricycles has digital stickers from which passengers can use smart phones to access essential data of all operators. He also explained that with the stickers, movements of the tricycles will be tracked to ensure each operator only operates within communities they are expected to serve.

    … Grants N50m to 1,000 Keke Napep operators

    Aside the 2,200 persons allocated the tricycles and taxis, Governor Zulum also granted N50m to 1000 members of different Keke NAPEP operators who did not benefit from the launch given the fact that the associations have thousands of members, some of whom either own tricycles or work as riders and spare-riders.

    The 1,000 persons was to each receive N50,000 as social support.

    A combine total of 3,200 youths benefitted from the distribution of the tricycles, taxis and grant.

    Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Birno state, Thursday, flagged off the construction of eight roads and two bridges at a contract sum of N11.5bn in Maiduguri,the city capital of the state.

    The construction works are to be executed by a Chinese company namely, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC) and a Borno-based construction company, Obtuse Tech Engineering Company Limited after due process was observed.

    Performing the flag-off at the popular Post Office Round-about on Ahmadu Bello Way in a colourful ceremony to decongest the heavy vehicular traffic in the metropolis with the Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur and the SSG, Usman Shuwa in attendance.

    Others are the State APC Chairman, Ali Dalori, commissioners, top government officials, site engineers and other technical persons.

    Borno State Government has banned thuggery in all political activities across the length and breadth of the state, warnig that any politician, no matter how highly placed, if found harbouring or sponsoring thugs Will henceforth loose his support and be made to face the full wrath of the law.

    Governor BABAGANA UMARA ZULUM handed down the warning during a parley with youth leaders and political groups, associated with thuggery known as ECOMOG in the state, stressing that his administration will not condone any act of indiscipline.

    According to him, he had at different times approved  series of vocational jobs and empowerment schemes for the groups to make them self reliant and to  have access to lawful means of livelihood.  

    Inspite of all these measures, the Governor observed, most of the youths still prefer to engage in political thuggery, as a means of livelihood. 

    The spokesman to the Governor, Mallam Isa Umar Gusau, quoted the governor as saying, “Borno is the only place we have, and we can’t allow a few of you to destroy the state. We have over six million people in the state. We can’t allow you to continue terrorizing the populace, we can’t tolerate that anymore.”

    Added that, “We will not continue to give you money, you cannot hold us to ransom. The security agencies have been directed to deal with anyone found parading himself as ECOMOG, either at the airport, graveyard, wedding receptions or anywhere. You have been disturbing the public peace, constituting nuisance”, Zulum said.

     On the menace of the ECOMOG the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan, hinted that, there has been an alarming increase of house breaking, burglary including cases of theft in the state. 

    Visibly angry, the governor warned that, any person or group of persons found contributing to the insecurity situation within the state capital and its environs will be severely dealt with. 

    Also adding their voices, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Abdu Umar, and  state Director DSS, Munir Mamman, pledged to act in line with the governor’s directive.

    It would be recalled that in July 2019, two months after assuming office, Governor Zulum had announced a ban on political thuggery in Maiduguri and launched a vocational employment scheme to support the youths.  

    In 2020 and 2021, Zulum extended his ban on political thuggery to Biu and Gwoza, both of which have had a notorious prevalence of thuggery.

    Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has appointed three board members for State Universal Education Board, SUBEB, namely, Professor Bulama Kagu, to serve as Executive Chairman with Hon. Habu Daja Aliyu Damboa and Hon. Abubakar  Deribe, first and  second term appointees from southern and central Borno respectively.

    This was contained in a statement issued by the special adviser to the Governor on public relations and strategy, Mal. Isa Gusau, Monday night, explained that Zulum acted in accordance with section 12(1) a and b of the Borno State Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education Law, 2005.

    Professor Bulama Kagu, a one time Dean faculty of education and school of post graduate studies, University of Maiduguri,  between 2007 & 2017 and currently, coordinator of the Universal Basic Education Programme at the University of Maiduguri and  Chairman of Borno State Counseling Association. 

    Also appointed was Engr. Ibrahim Idriss Garba, adviser monitoring evaluation and special projects, from Hawul  local government area of BORNO state occasioned by the elevation of the former adviser in charge of the office, to the position of Hon. Commissioner of education as cabinet member.

    The statement quoted Governor Zulum, while congratulating the three appointees hinted that “their appointments were based on merit” and urged them to demonstrate absolute dedication and selfless service in their new offices to justify the confidence of Borno people on them.

    Borno state governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, Friday launched the  State E-commerce platform designed and adopted by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation on the Android operating systems during the flag off of SMEDAN’s conditional grant scheme in Maiduguri.

    He said his administration was committed to developing business enterprises in the state, especially through engaging several youths in various employment platforms to make them self reliant by disbursement of more than N3bn.

    He explained that, the administration has invested in many new vocational training centres and has revived old ones to rekindle SMSEs in the state by establishing sustainable businesses of their own.

    And hinted that a sustainability development agency will be created in the near future with the aim of developing a vanguard for rural industrialization and poverty reduction to enhance livelihood of the people.

    Prof. Zulum urged the SMSEs artisans and technicians to register with Borno State E-commerce in order to explore the various economic opportunities and have the knowledge on advertisment and other technologies in order to boost their trade.

    Recalled his recent trip to the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and the Nigerian Export Processing Zone Authority (NEPZA) in Abuja to attract investment opportunities to the state as the governor announced the application for the resuscitation of the Banki Free Trade Zone, BFTZ..

    In a welcome address, the Commissioner Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Babagana Malumbe, said that the platform was innovated in line with Governor Zulum’s 10 Pact Agenda and 25 Years Development Plan towards formalizing the small scale enterprises and reducing unemployment and federal government’s digitalization process.

    He said it is also aimed at reducing unemployment, promoting regional trade and increasing export by capitalizing on the three borders shared by Borno State, in a bid to increase internally generated revenue (IGR) to the state.

    The Commissioner also expanciated on the  benefits of the platform, stressing that, it will enable citizens to join the global village to market their products, locate artisans and choose stocks based on one’s choice.

    Arguing that the essence of the launching was for the registration of location, contacts and commodities for entrepreneurs.

    BOSG Engages 1,000 Hunters To Secure Farmers In Borno

    Borno State Government has engaged the services of 1,000 hunters to provide protection to farmers at the outskirts of Jere and environs during this year’s cropping season.

    The state GOVERNOR, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, Thursday, chaired the induction of the 1,000 hunters freshly enlisted to join existing ones in the on-going fight against Boko Haram terrorism.

    According to him,the hunters are to provide dedicated protection to farmers who cultivate crops in the outskirts of Jere and it’s environs.

    It could be recalled, over 70 farmers were killed in November 2020 as well as FARMERS in parts of Maiduguri metropolis, Konduga and Mafa Local Government Areas.

    Our correspondent reported that, GOVERNOR Zulum, had since 2019, engaged the services of thousands of hunters drawn from different parts of northern Nigeria, to join volunteers in the civilian JTF and vigilantes to reduce the risk of being killed by insurgents.

    As a result,the Governor has also increased monthly allowances of all volunteers, provided kits, surveillance tools and allocated hundreds of vehicles to units across the 27 local government areas of the state.

    The 1,000 additional hunters have since undergone an induction exercise at Gongulong ward,having completed security vetting by the DSS and the military.

    “Our local hunters have become part of our success story because of their active involvement in trying to address the security challenges we have been facing in the state. This largely prompted us to engage in the recruitment of more hunters to assist our gallant military in their undeniable and commendable efforts to end the insurgency” Zulum said.

    In a welcome address, member representing Jere at the House of Representatives, Satomi Ahmed, lauded Zulum for his foresight and determination to secure lives and property of Borno people.

    The Governor has been combining mass recruitment and equipping of more counter insurgency volunteers into the C-JTF, hunters, and vigilantes, with support for the Nigerian Armed forces, and provision of education, and socio economic support to vulnerable persons across the state.

    The ceremony was attended by the SSG, Usman Jidda Shuwa, Head of Service, Barr. Simon Malgwi, Commissioners and other top Government functionaries.

    Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has commenced the implementation of  the federal government rural grazing area, RUGA, scheme under the  national livestock development plan in BORNO state..

    This was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser Media, Isa Gusau, and circulated to the media, indicated that the GOVERNOR was in Abuja on a visit to the Minister of agriculture and Natural Resources, Muhammad Nanono, to intimate the Minister on his plans to domesticate the ranching project.

    Already, land has been allocated to that effect according to the statement.

    “Besides to our ongoing ranching project sited in the central part of Borno”, stressing that the state was in another collaborative project that will be extended to South and North Senatorial Districts of Borno state.

    He said, officials from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture are expected to arrive in Maiduguri soon on an assessment tour to implement the RUGA project.

    Responding, the Minister Mohammed Nanono, applauded the Governor for his foresight and efforts to commence the ranching project and assured  that preliminary works will be completed to pave the way to commence the RUGA scheme in Borno state.

    The GOVERNOR was accompanied by top officials including the Commissioner of Animal and Fisheries, Modu Walama, Special Adviser on Animal Resources, Tijjani Modu and state Co-ordinator of RUGA, Musa Kubo.

    Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State is set to collaborate with the Nigerian military to safeguard farmers during the 2021 farming season in the state.

    The Governor disclosed this in Mobbar Local Government Area of the state, assuring over 3,000 farmers who are to benefit from improved seeds during this year farming period.

    He directed that 3,000 families be provided with packages of inputs that would include improved seeds, fertilizer, water pumps and chemicals to safely return to their farms as they will be secured by the Nigerian military.

    According to him, 3,000 families will be benefiting in a second phase of inputs’ distribution by the Governor for rain fed and irrigation farming.

    The Governor visited the farms to assess progress made by the 1,200 irrigations, about which he said he was impressed.

    “Earlier this year, we were here to support some of our farmers in the first phase. In this second phase, we will profile 3,000 families from those that did not benefit and we shall support them for both irrigation and rain fed farming. The 3,000 households to benefit will translate to about 20,000 or less persons benefiting from the scheme,” Zulum said.

    Damasak, which was famous for massive agriculture, had farming activities suspended for nearly six years following Boko Haram’s occupation in 2014; a situation that threatened food security in the area.

    “Let me commend the Nigerian military, the police and other paramilitary forces for their unprecedented support to our farmers. They allowed our farmer to safely go to their farmlands and return within stipulated time.

    “To the Chief of Army Staff, the theatre commander and all principal officers, we remain eternally grateful to all of them as they steadily implement the directive of the President, that the military should secure safe farming in Borno,” Zulum said.

    Borno State Government has concluded plans to construct 300 Housing units of different categories and sizes with required facilities at Miringa Community in Biu local government.

    The deputy governor, Umar Usman Kadafur, announced this during the foundation laying ceremony of the housing estate .

    He said both the federal and state governments have committed a large chut of resources for the construction of houses in the state to solve the growing needs of shelter to the less privilege who were displaced as a result of the decade long Boko Haram Crisis.

    According to him,when the project is completed it will go a long way in providing housing accommodation to the people in villages around the area especially the displaced ones.

    And to the site engineers, he charged them to ensure that standards and specifications are maintained right from the commencement to the completion of the project.

    In his remarks, Commissioner Ministry for Reconstruction Rehabilitation and Resettlement, Engr Mustapha Gubio, said all is set for the commencement of the construction work of the 300 housing units including a School, Water facilities, Health centre, Shops and recreational site stressing that the project will be completed in the next 100-120 days.

    GOVERNOR BABAGANA UMARA ZULUM, has said that, Borno state government will engage at least 3,000 teachers in the next two years before the expiration of his 4year tenure in May 2023.

    Equally, he said, government will set up four vocational centres in Maiduguri, Mafa, Magumeri and Kwaya/Kusar in which 6,000 to 8,000 unemployed youths will be trained to eke a living and to become self-sufficient, there-after.

    This was contained in his remarks at the weekend in MAIDUGURI to commemorate the 2021, June 12, democracy day celebrations.

    According to him, the Government of Morocco is to establish a vocational school in Maiduguri at the cost of N4 billion to augment the poor stage of primary education in the state.
    “Up till now our primary education system is in comatose, whether we like it or not,” ZULUM said.

    And that during the six-month teachers’ verification exercise, the committee was able to save N450 million from ghost teachers and therefore assured the people that before the end of this year, 3,000 teachers will be engaged.

    “We shall do everything possible to ensure that qualified teachers are recruited into the primary education system,” to enable children of the less privileged to send their children and wards to primary schools.

    Lamenting over the poor stage of primary education, he said: “Most of the primary school teachers in Mafa, Monguno, Nganzai and others could not spell and write their names correctly despite the fact that they are proud holders of the National Certificate of Education (NCE) minimum qualifications to teach children”.

    Adding that there is nothing to write home about education in the state, urging, those teachers that are not qualified to go back to school.
