APC loses Two lawmakers to PDP in Edo

The All Progressives Congress, APC, Edo State has lost two members of the House of Assembly.

The two lawmakers are the former Deputy Speaker of the House and member representing Akoko-Edo 1, Yekini Idaiye and the member representing Orhionmwon East Constituency, Hon Nosayaba Okunbor.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun, during the house sitting on Monday read their letters of resignation from APC on the floor of the house.

According to Yekini Idaiye’s letter; May I use this medium to inform you of my resignation as a member of APC.

“I took this decision because of internal crisis in the party from my ward to the local government level which led to the factions in the party for some time now.

“It is on this note that I have decided to resign my membership of the APC and officially defect to the PDP.”

Hon Nosayaba Okunbor ‘s letter reads; this is to formally inform you of my decision to resign my membership of APC.

“This decision is sequel to the division within the party which has become intractable.

“I have made strenuous efforts to ensure that this division within the party is reconciled in line with the provision of the party’s constitution, but to no avail as the leadership of the party has simply refused to allow the issues involved to be adjudicated upon.

“Consequently, I have no other option than to resign my membership as a lean Liberty they say is better than fat slavery,”.

Onobun welcomed the lawmakers to the PDP and commended their desire to work with the state governor in making Edo great again.

Meanwhile, the House adopted a resolution calling on the state commissioner of police and other relevant security agencies to address the menace of armed hoodlums unleashing terror in Orhionmwon, Esan west and other parts of the State.

Edo has no funds to host National Sports Festival – Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has called on the Federal Government to help in funding the National Sports Festival, scheduled to hold in the state.

Obaseki said the state is ready to host the 20th edition of the sports event but does not have the financial capacity to host 11,500 athletes and officials.

Obaseki, who received members of the Main Organising Committee from the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development in Benin City on Tuesday, said COVID-19 had taken its toll on the finances of the state.

He said: “Since March last year, you know the financial strength of most states, sub-nationals and countries. For us as a state, we are ready to host but don’t have the funds at this point in time to host the Games; this is the plain truth.

“If the Federal Government however in its wisdom decides to bring the funding for the Games, we will be too willing to host the country. We have to live with COVID-19 because it has come to stay; even with the vaccination, the virus will still be around. Canceling the Games is not the solution to this issue. We have to sit down and look at all these issues critically before reaching a final decision.”

Obaseki added, “Beyond the Games itself, which is an instrument of unity and a way of engaging the youths, there is the Tokyo Olympics to prepare for. But how do we prepare for the Olympics without Edo 2020? Can we afford to expose our young people to the dangers of COVID-19 or would there be other Olympics in the future? We have to balance these things.

“We have to make a decision whether we want to go to the Tokyo games. If we want to, how do we prepare Nigeria’s contingent, where are the trials?”

However, Nebeolisa Anako, who led the delegation to Obaseki’s office, expressed delight with the facilities inspected by the committee for the festival scheduled to hold from February 14 to 28.

“We are here to look at the preparedness of the state and determine how it would be hosted in a safe manner, considering the pandemic. What we saw while inspecting the facilities for the festival gladdens my heart. It shows that the state government is prepared to host the event. We are also looking at the funding for the Games.”

It’s not political sunset yet for Ize-Iyamu — Chidoka

Osita Chidoka, a former Aviation Minister, says the performance of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just-concluded Sept. 19 governorship election in Edo is gallant.

Chidoka, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on Sunday in Awka that Ize-Iyamu among other candidates, gave Gov. Godwin Obaseki, the incumbent governor and candidate of PDP a good fight in spite of the odds.

He urged the APC candidate to hold his head up high and see the results as announced by the Independent  National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials as a reflection of the people’s will.

The former aviation minister called on the APC candidate to concede victory and congratulate the winner.

He said the election gave him the rare opportunity of having those who called him names to recant and rewrite his story, while still politically active.

According to him, if I were Ize-Iyamu, I would have called Gov. Obaseki before the final announcement of results.

“Those who four years ago, called him liar, thief, cultist recanted, not many get that opportunity.

“The outing against a sitting governor was not bad, he maintained his following, across the state, in spite of the baggage of his political party and chief supporter.

“This is not sunset, it is twilight and the sun may yet shine again in his future endeavours; glorious future beckons if you rise above self and claim victory.

  • Congratulations PDP, Edo, Obaseki

    Congratulations PDP, Edo, Obaseki

    By Muhammad Goronyo, Sokoto
…Nigeria No Longer A Lonely Crowd
The decisive turning point in any major contest is not who wins but adherence to the ground rules that made it possible for a victor to emerge without squabble. Our esteemed party has laboured tirelessly over the past days, weeks and months to, first, bring Gov. Godwin Obaseki, into our fold, and subsequently assemble at every available opportunity to rub minds and fine tune our modalities, strategies and arrangements.
Tambuwal was speaking on the just concluded Edo gubernatorial election.
“We did these bearing in mind that we need to transcend the milieu of political brigandage and lawlessness in order for one of our own to maintain his position.
“Our collective resolve, borne out of our shared democratic values, team spirit and concern for the people as our primary constituency galvanized us to work within the ambits of the spirit and letter of the  law. All of us, as servants of the people set aside, with utmost caution, negative thoughts that our party will not have a fair deal. Our logistical and legal nightmares, if any, were that the people of Edo state will not get a fair deal if the rules of the game are circumvented before and during the election.
” In order for us to be circumspective comfortable we resolved to follow the rules. We also admonished our esteemed followers to do the same even in the face of provocation, intimidation and apparent show of force, wherever these emerges”.
He further explained with pleasant surprise, their thoughts and adherence to the principles of right being might was shared by “our political opponents. From Aso Rock came a firm directive that the game must be played according to the rules. In following this directive our security forces jettisoned the toga of allying with outlawed mode of electoral conduct. Similarly, the election umpire, hitherto tainted as biased reviewed its position and stayed on the path of equity and fair play”.
Without equivocation, all that played out in the Saturday election in Edo wouldn’t have been possible if the international community had left everything to chance. They listened patiently to cries for justice and level playing ground; and, at the appropriate time they weighed in on the side of the people. Indeed, their stern but passionate position and posture was invaluable besides being a universal declaration that all of human race is one indivisible entity that cannot remain entrapped in politically orchestrated selfishness that benefits some and throw others into untold hardship by making them sacrificial lambs in an unnecessary orgy of violence.
As the election was proceeding apace yesterday, “I took a bold step to commend Mr President over his statesmanship. Some may have taken my observations with a pinch of salt. But as an incurable Democrat what I foresaw with the benefit of quality information filtering out of the theater of election in the legendary state, I became convinced that Nigeria is no longer a lonely crowd. And, more convincingly, that our shepherd has embraced the age-long norm of cooperation which has served some successful democracies across the free world well long before now.
“I believe that it is not the victory that we savour as we celebrate the outcome of our painstaking collaboration and stakeholders firmness in pursuing our passion for the people. Instead, the applause we receive from like minded democrats and the unexpected normative patronage that became pivotal to our success, shall, we sincerely hope, become the fulcrum upon which the outcomes of future electoral engagements in the country will revolve, anchor and rest perpetually. Today, more than ever before, I am convinced that democratic tenets are taking firm root in our country.
“As I join the good and historically courageous people of Edo State in celebrating the winner of this election, I once again doff my hat for the President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing the conduct of the election to be free, fair and devoid of violence. The same kudos goes to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), national and international non-governmental organizations, the international community at large, well-meaning politicians and our indefatigable party leaders and members for being steadfast and consistent in their demands for equity, fairness and justice”.
