DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Tuesday on the command’s achievement in the enforcement of the government order.

The Edo Government had on Sunday imposed a statewide dusk-to-dawn curfew, which commenced on Monday and was to last from 7 pm to 6 am daily.

This was part of the state government’s strategy to curtail the spread of the Coronavirus in the state.

“The clampdown on violators was necessitated by the Edo Government’s address on Sunday imposing a dusk to dawn curfew in the state.

“The command together with other sister security agencies in the state commenced enforcement immediately the curfew commenced on Monday.

“The 50 persons apprehended represents the number of violators from the various divisions of the command as well as the state command headquarters.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the violators apprehended within the Benin metropolis were taken to the mobile court at Urhokpota for prosecution.

At Urhokpata, Mrs Beatrice Imade, the Coordinator of the COVID-19 mobile court, said the mobile court had been handling an average of 40 violation cases per day since it was set up.

Imade said that those convicted are usually given non-custodial sentencing as well as community service and option of fine.

She said that the fine imposed on the violators was less than N10,000.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), as at April 20, there are 15 confirmed cases of Coronavirus reported in Edo; seven active cases, seven discharged cases and one death.

COVID-19: We are set for a lockdown in Edo -CP

The Edo Commissioner of Police, CP Lawan Jimeta on Thursday, said that the command would be firm, but fair in enforcing a total lockdown should the Government order such directives.

Jimeta gave the assurance on Thursday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.

He explained that because the Edo Government had not ordered or directed a total lockdown in the state, the police command and other security agencies could only sensitise the public on the dangers of the spread of the coronavirus in the state.

He appealed to their conscience to do the right thing and adhere strictly to measures already put in place by the state government in containing the spread of the pandemic in the state.

He said that the command would also work according to the Inspector General of Police directive as well as the human rights guidelines.

“If government decides on a total lockdown in the state, it will not be as punishment on the citizens, because they were not just part of the society, but also part of the government.

“So, government should come up with measures to ease the hardship that a total lockdown would foster on the people.”

The commissioner therefore called on residents to respect the partial restriction of movement put in place by the state government to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He noted that the restriction would give the state government the opportunity to monitor contacts of reported cases and prevent further spread of the virus.

He noted that the security agencies do not have the full authority to restrict any movements in and outside the state, hence the deployment of advisory techniques in educating the people on the need to respect the partial restriction.

He, however, sued for civility from security agencies in the discharge of their duties not just during the partial restriction of movement in the state, but always.

He also appealed to relevant stakeholders as well as the leadership of various unions in the state to join security agencies in sensitising members of the public as well as their members on the need to listen and obey directives.

According to him, there is minimum enlightenment by stakeholders, but stressed the need for government to embark on massive public enlightenment.

He also commented on the reported activities of a Chinese Company in Idogbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the state, where it was alleged that the Chinese Company locked in their staff.

Jimeta explained that after thorough investigation, they discovered that the staff are residents in the Staff Quarters of the company and were advised not to leave their quarters to avoid contracting the virus.

He appealed to all stakeholders to join the government in the advocacy on the need for social distancing and practicing of proper hygiene. (NAN)

We are ready for reconciliation- Edo APC Publicity Secretary

The Edo Publicity Secretary of the All Progress Congress (APC), Pastor Joseph Osagiede, says the party is ready for reconciliation if initiated by a neutral body.

Osagiede, who made the disclosure while briefing journalists at the party’s Secretariat in Benin on Monday, said either the presidency or the Benin traditional council should make such move.

According to him, we have already said that we are willing for reconciliation, but we cannot constitute a reconciliation body when you are an interested party in the issue.

“A neutral body from the presidency or Benin traditional council can set up a committee for reconciliation.

He expressed optimism that the crisis in the party at the state level was dying down as the activities of the Edo People’s Movement (EPM), a breakout group of the party, was fading away.

“I think the APC crisis is already ending because we know that EPM is already folding up; we know that the members of EPM are also reaching out to us”.

Osagiede said it was expected that the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole should heed to the wish of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare 11 who had called for peace to reign.

“The Oba’s wish is that there should be peace and for Oshiomhole to still be supporting EPM, he is working against the wish of the Oba.

“The National Chairman should take a clue from the Oba and come home, meet with the governor and take him to the Oba and say we have reconciled.

He added that he was not a factional publicity secretary of the party but the state publicity secretary, noting that those who left the party to form EPM had no bearing with APC. (NAN)
