#EndSARS: Drama as protesters appear before Lagos Judicial Panel as witnesses

Drama ensured at the Lagos state Judicial Panel On Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters currently sitting at Lekki Lagos after three of the #EndSARS protesters presented themselves in court as witnesses.

The protesters identified as Victoria Oniru, Dabira Ayuku, and Perpetual Kamsiyuchukwu, were presented before the panel by their legal counsel, Adesina Ogunlana.

Before they were presented before the panel, a lawyer to the Lagos state government, I. J Okechukwu, opposed the presentation of #EndSARS protesters before the panel, arguing that #EndSARS is not a legal entity and its faceless.

“There is no entity called “EndSARS protesters.  My learned friend is entitled to represent anybody that is known to law. We cannot have anybody appearing for a body that is not known to law, no leader, no structure. EndSARS protesters is a nebulous entity,” said Okechukwu

Rotimi Seriki, counsel for the Lekki Concession Company, (LLC), aligned with the government lawyer. He also said the LCC was not an “interested party” in the matter but invited because “the panel that feels it might have relevant evidence to assist it. We cannot allow every Tom, Dick, and Harry to represent,” he concluded.

Ogunlana retorted that he did not just appear at the panel without prior instruction of his clients. He went on to call out three persons, whom he said were part of protesters and had hired him to represent them.

“I am not representing spirits or ghosts. We’re here, to tell the truth. These are part of the people running underground being threatened,” Ogunlana said in response to the objection by Owonikoko and Seriki.

“Genuine #EndSARS Protesters” seek arrest, revocation of Sowore’s bail bond

    ..Calls for his thorough investigation

    By Ujah Simon, Kaduna

Group under the aegis of genuine #EndSARS protesters have called on the federal government to arrest the publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, over alleged breaching the conditions of the bail granted him following his earlier arrest and detention by the Department of State Service, DSS, for alleged treason.
While commending Nigeria Police for rising to the occasion on Friday by dispersing a handful of “misguided youths assembled at the gate of the National Assembly by the so-called activist to foment trouble under the pretext of #EndSARS protest”, the group in a statement, Friday, in Abuja, insisted that Sowore, has breached the conditions of the bail granted him following his #RevolutionNow” and must be immediately arrested and also have his bail revoked.

The statement made available to our kaduna correspondent was reportedly signed by Dr Orji Nwakocha for South East; Dr Aremu Babatunde for South West; Comrade Frank Jaja representing South South and Alhaji Ibrahim Dan Iya for North West. Others are Sheik Mohammed Adamu for North East;  Mr Dakwohi Samson for FCT; and Comrade Peter Yohana for North Central, respectively.
The Genuine #EndSARS Protesters said the renewed protest being spearheaded by Mr. Sowore was not known to them, saying they had since backed down from their protests and were already meeting with governments at all levels on roundtable.

The group appealed to parents to advised their wards against allowing themselves to be misled by Mr Sowore, who, it accused of attempting to hijack the #EndSARS platform to deliberately blackmail President Muhammadu Buhari and his government.
According to the Genuine #EndSARS Protesters, the clandestine motive of Mr Sowore is to feather his own nest, noting with concern, the insistence of Mr Sowore to go on protest when all those that started the #EndSARS protests had not only backed down but also in meeting with governments towards resolving issues that informed the action.

The group therefore tasked security agencies to see Sowore as a threat to national security and immediately treat him as one.
“The Genuine #EndSARS Protesters, being the body of the real people that protested recently against the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS’ excessive powers and brutality, have been watching with concern the attempt by one Mr Omoyele Sowore to hijack our platform to further  his inordinate ambition.
“We feel concerned that after we backed down from the protests and are now engaging governments at all levels with a view  to resolving the issues that informed the protest, the said Mr Sowore is busy assembling some misguided elements using our platform.

“We are, however, not surprised at Mr Sowore’s insistence on protest given his antecedent. We recall that he had called on revolution against the present federal administration, leading to his arrest and detention. And given his ignoble role in this act, we are not surprised at what he is driving at. It is in this regard that we wish to strongly appeal to the security agencies to see Mr Sowore as a security threat and treat him as one.
“By this, we are not only calling on his arrest but also appealing to the federal authorities to immediately arrest and withdraw his bail conditions for flouting the conditions attached to it” the group said in the statement.’”, it stated.

Drawing attention to the event at the National Assembly gate where the youths assembled by Mr Sowore to protest against the government under the guise of #EndSARS were dispersed, the group commended Nigeria police for the action.

“His desperate attempts to relaunch the #EndSARS protests, which have since been rested by the original promoters, to allow action from governments at the various, levels is unacceptable.
“We are thereby calling on not just the police but also other security agencies to see Mr Sowore as agent of destabilisation and pick him up appropriately for investigation., “the Genuine #EndSARS Protesters said.
While drawing attention to the events of  Friday,November 5, and Sunday, November 1, 2020, in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where a few persons were seen protesting under the auspices of the #EndSARS protest, the Genuine #EndSARS protesters said the developments were indications of a selfish agenda being hatch by Sowore for a predetermined end.Recall that the said protesters – with Sowore assuming a prominent place – had besieged the precincts of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, as well as the Force Headquarters – where they left the “#EndSARS” inscription boldly on the roads.
This development has, however, triggered an angry reaction from the original promoters of #EndSARS protests, who have called on the youths in the country, to disregard the revivalist agenda.
According to the group, the need for citizens to give governments at all levels the chance to address the concerns that necessitated the EndSARS demonstrations, had become compelling, more so that commitments had already been made.
This was as it submitted that the antecedents of Sowore, who had led a failed “revolution” attempt, could not inspire meaningful followership, hence the need to disown him.
“We make bold to say that, considering the aftermath of the nationwide protests – as seen in the hijack by hoodlums and attendant deaths, destruction of public and private property, no responsible citizen would want to re-ignite the event”. “We hereby call on millions of our articulate, ever-conscious and responsible youths across the 36 states of the federation, and the FCT, to resist this latest antics by Sowore, as it will not only threaten the relative peace being enjoyed today, but disturb the socio-economic fabric of a nation negotiating recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic”, it insisted.

NYCN Commends IGP Over Handling of #ENDSARS Protest

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has commended the Inspector- General of Nigeria Police, Mohammed Adamu for the professionalism exhibited by Police personnel during the unfortunate #Endsars protest that resulted to loss of lives and destruction of properties across the country.

NYCN President, Solomon Adodo at a Press briefing on Thursday in Abuja explained that while the several incidences that gave rise for the agitations to end the now-dissolved Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), were genuine, the ensuing violence was regrettable, howbeit the tact deployed by the Police IG saved the day.

It would be recalled that the protest which began peacefully later metamorphosed into days of killings and looting across the country by hoodlums. 22 police officers also lost their lives in the process while 205 police stations and formations were torched.

According to the NYCN President, the situation would have resulted to greater damage had the police leadership failed to act tactfully in the interest of the nation. Adamu

“The leadership of the Police took responsibility during the fracas in the most professional manner. The personnel were professional and exercised maximum restraints in the face of eminent danger. We find this conduct highly commendable.

“We are not unmindful of the role Nigeria police play in safeguarding the individual and public space and therefore they must be given the necessary support. If the police is demoralised, the tendency is that criminals will take over the public space, and the country, in the end anarchy will prevail. Therefore, no amount of provocation, no amount of distractions should make the Police shy away from its constitutional responsibilities”, the NYCN stated.

The umbrella body of the Nigerian youth further commended the step taken by the IGP in setting up an assessment committee to ascertain the loss suffered by the Nigeria Police Force across the country during the #EndSARS protests for the purpose of strategic planning, re-construction and re-equipment, as well as for future reference and visit to families of slain personnel on behalf of the Force was also lauded. The Council advised citizens particularly the youth to cooperate with the Police in the legitimate discharge of their duty while also ensuring that the body will maintain vigilance to ensure that no law abiding Youth is victimized or brutalized again.

“My lordship, this revelation is a big clog in the wheels of justice going forward for the future of our democracy”

” We are committed to enhancing democratic ethics in Nigeria. We have been at the forefront of holding the military to task, but it is only fair for the truth to be unraveled instead of relying on innuendos and apparent conspiracies”

My lordship, you will recall that only yesterday, the original video footage mounted at the toll gate had actually stopped working before the alleged shooting of protesters by the military occurred. This startling revelation was made by the management and custodians of the “Lekki toll gate” nothing can be more useful than this revelation in my view”

“We are afraid and concerned that such levels of deceit could be employed against a nation’s military”

The Organisation reiterated it’s belief in the integrity of the panel members and urged it to look up the veracity of new facts and act accordingly.

#Endsars: FG reassures youth of 5-point demand implementation

Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the Minister of Science and Technology has reiterated the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in implementing the five-point demand of the EndSARS protesters.

Onu gave the assurance in Abakaliki on Sunday during a sympathy visit to Miss Favour Imoha, a 300-level medical student of the Ebonyi State University (EBSU), who was hit on the head by stray bullet during the protest in Abakaliki.

The minister said that the ‘Executive Order Five’ was aimed at industrialising the nation and appealed to the youths to cooperate with the administration to succeed in its strive to create more jobs for the citizenry.

He said that Buhari was working hard to bequeath a new Nigeria that the younger generation would be proud of.

The onetime governor of old Abia state urged the youths to take advantage of the N75 billion victims survival fund and other federal government’s economic intervention programmes to empower themselves.

“The future is for our young people and if we don’t give them the best, what will happen in the future when they govern the country?

“The message to our youths is that your voice has been heard at the highest level and that all your demands as contained in the 5-point demands have been accepted and are being implemented,” Onu said.

Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation on Sunday in Abakaliki said that violence was inimical to national growth and development.

He however, cautioned youths against indulging in violent agitations and urged them to use dialogue as a means to achieving their demands.

The minister, who regretted the magnitude of destruction of critical assets and property of private citizens by angry youths in the wake of the #Endsars protests, advised youths to adopt dialogue in resolving grievances.

The minister prayed for speedy recovery of the victim and others who sustained different degrees of injuries during the violent protests in the state and for peaceful repose of those who lost their lives.

Onu commended medical doctors at the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital for working hard to save the lives of the victim and others who were brought to the hospital following injuries they sustained during the unrest.

He said: “We will like to use this opportunity to say to those who carried out the Endsars protest in a violent manner that, that is not a proper way to go.

“Violence is inimical to our national growth and development.

“Violence cannot help us as a nation because if we start destroying our national assets particularly when we know that we need a lot of infrastructure; no foreign investors will come and help us accelerate the process of industrialisation.

“Industrialisation will help us create more jobs for our young people, create wealth for the old and young and this cannot be achieved in an atmosphere of violence.

“Once you have violence, it introduces tension and people can no longer feel secured both for their lives and for their investments.”

Meanwhile, Dr Godwin Imoha, victim’s father commended the minister for coming to the family’s aid.

  • #Lekkimassacre: Why we won’t disclose identity of soldiers deployed to Lekki tollgate – Nigerian Army

#Lekkimassacre: Why we won’t disclose identity of soldiers deployed to Lekki tollgate – Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has said it will not disclose the identities of its men who were deployed to the Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020.

In an interview with Punch, Osoba Olaniyi, spokesman of the 81 division of the Nigerian Army, said it is unprofessional for the Army to release the names of the soldiers who were deployed to the tollgate on that day.

“It is against operational security. We don’t give that. It is against the policy of operational security. There is no problem here. The picture some people paint, as if we are fighting with the state government, is wrong,” the newspaper quoted him to have said.

Olaniyi in the interview, also stated that the Army will only appear before the judicial panel set up by the Lagos state government to investigate allegations of police brutality in the state as well as the October 20 Lekki tollgate gunfire incident, if the invitation is coming from the state government and not the panel.

Recall that the judicial panel on Friday, October 30, paid an unscheduled visit to the Military hospital Ikoyi to inspect the mortuary. They were initially denied access but after a while, were allowed in. They were later to be told that the morgue is undergoing renovation.

Punch reports that an invitation has been sent to the military to appear before the panel. However, Olaniyi said only the state government can ask them to appear before the panel.

“If we receive a letter from the state, we will go. Are we not under civil authorities? Are we not part of Nigerians? Have you forgotten that we did not go there (Lekki tollgate) on our own?

It is not the duty of the members of the panel to tell us that. If the state wants the (81) Division to come, they will write and we will oblige. See, if they have written to the division, it is our duty to go. It is not for them to go through the media as if we are scared of coming.

It is the state government that constituted that panel of inquiry. So if anybody needs to get in touch with us to come, it is still the state and not members of the panel.” Punch quotes him as saying

The Nigerian Army had initially denied being responsible for the incident. In separate tweets, the army had labeled the reports of soldiers opening fire at the tollgate as fake news. However, in a statement released last week, Olaniyi confirmed that soldiers from the division were the ones who carried out the operation. He said they were deployed to the tollgate on the request of the Lagos state government and that they also did not shoot any protester.

“At no time did soldiers of the Nigerian Army open fire on any civilian. From the onset of the ENDSARS protest, there was no time personnel of 81 Division Nigerian Army Lagos were involved.

However, the decision to call in the military was taken by the Lagos State Government (LASG) after a 24- hour curfew was imposed.

This was as a result of the violence which led to several police stations being burnt, policemen killed, suspects in police custody released and weapons carted away. The situation was fast degenerating into anarchy. It was at this point that LASG requested for the military to intervene in order to restore normalcy.

The intervention of the military followed all laid down procedures for Internal Security operations and all the soldiers involved acted within the confines of the Rules of Engagement (ROE) for Internal Security operations.”the statement read

The Lagos state government is yet to react to the Military’s claim that it requested the deployment of soldiers to the tollgate. Governor Sanwo-Olu has repeatedly said he had no hand in the deployment of the military as it wasn’t within his jurisdiction to call in the military.
