Man City Retain English Premier League Title

Manchester City retained the Premier League title in the most dramatic of fashion as they hauled themselves back from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 with three goals in the final 15 minutes on Sunday.

Ilkay Gundogan came off the bench to score twice with Rodri also on target as Pep Guardiola’s men held off Liverpool’s title charge to win the league by a point.

In scenes remiscent of the first of City’s now six league titles in 11 seasons when Sergio Aguero scored a 93rd-minute winner to deny Manchester United the title on goal difference, the champions produced a remarkable comeback at the Etihad.

Goals from Matty Cash and former Liverpool favourite Philippe Coutinho looked set to gift the Reds the title.

Jurgen Klopp’s men did their job by also coming from a goal down to beat Wolves 3-1 at Anfield, but City’s rescue act ensured Liverpool’s bid for an unprecedented quadruple is over.

Gundogan started the comeback as he headed in Raheem Sterling’s cross at the back post.

Rodri then side-footed home from outside the box and Gundogan completed the fightback by tapping home Kevin De Bruyne’s cross at the back post.

Guardiola said before the game he wanted no repeat of Aguero’s legendary late strike a decade ago.

But the Calatan was the most relieved man in Manchester as he sealed the 10th league title of his coaching career in just 13 seasons.

Fans swarmed onto the pitch to celebrate at full-time and the crossbar at the goal where City scored all of their goals was snapped under the weight of supporters sitting on it.

  • EPL: Liverpool Beat Southampton To Keep Top-Four Hopes Alive

EPL: Liverpool Beat Southampton To Keep Top-Four Hopes Alive

Liverpool kept alive their hopes of a top-four finish in the Premier League as Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara sealed a 2-0 win against Southampton on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side moved above Tottenham into sixth place thanks to Mane’s first-half header and Thiago’s first goal for the club in the final moments at Anfield.

Liverpool’s first victory in four games in all competitions leaves them six points behind fourth-placed Leicester with a game in hand in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

It was only their second league win at Anfield in their last 11 matches.

They travel to second-placed Manchester United on Thursday for a crucial clash in their attempt to catch Leicester.

After the failed defence of the title they won last season, Liverpool would be delighted to salvage a troubled campaign with a top-four place.

To do that, they need to win their last four games and hope Leicester and fifth-placed West Ham stumble in the final stretch.

Southampton, 10 points above the relegation zone with four matches left, have now lost 13 of their 17 league games since beating Liverpool in January.

The Saints have earned the fewest points and conceded the most goals in the Premier League in 2021.

Liverpool were quick to scent blood against opponents in such poor form and Mohamed Salah was denied by Fraser Forster after Mane poked the ball through to the Egyptian in the six-yard box.

Diogo Jota’s stinging strike forced another good save from Forster before Salah tested the over-worked keeper from the resulting corner.

Georginio Wijnaldum guided a diving header against the bar as Liverpool kept up the pressure.

Southampton nearly snatched the lead against the run of play when Che Adams met Nathan Tella’s low cross with a close-range effort that was well saved by Alisson Becker.

But 46 seconds later, Liverpool’s dominant spell paid dividends as they broke away to take the lead in the 31st minute.

Salah clipped a cross to the far post and former Southampton forward Mane got behind the visitors defence to head home from close range.

Remarkably, it was the first time the duo had combined for a Premier League goal this season.

Tella should have cancelled out Mane’s 14th goal of the season, but the unmarked winger headed straight at Alisson from Nathan Redmond’s cross.

Jota’s blast was pushed away by Forster early in the second half, but Liverpool weren’t quite so cohesive after the break.

Alisson snuffed out Michael Obafemi’s raid and then turned over Ibrahima Diallo’s rocket from the edge of the area.

Adams had a golden opportunity to equalise in the closing stages after Alisson gifted him possession, but the striker’s effort lacked the accuracy to beat the Brazilian.

Thiago settled Liverpool’s nerves in stoppage time when the former Bayern Munich midfielder rifled home from 18 yards.

  • Chelsea Beat Man City To Delay Premier League Title Party

Chelsea Beat Man City To Delay Premier League Title Party

Chelsea forced Manchester City to put their Premier League title party on hold on Saturday, winning 2-1 to boost their own chances of a top-four finish in a dress rehearsal for the Champions League final.

Raheem Sterling gave the home side the lead just before half-time at an empty Etihad Stadium but Hakim Ziyech levelled and Marcos Alonso bundled in the winner in the dying seconds.

City could be crowned champions before they play again. Second-placed Manchester United face three matches before Guardiola’s men are next in action, against Newcastle on Friday.

The point lifts Chelsea into third spot, six clear of fifth-placed West Ham with just three games to go.

Thomas Tuchel’s in-form team ended City’s dreams of a historic quadruple by beating them in the FA Cup semi-final last month and they once more proved tricky opponents.

City, who have a huge 13-point advantage over second-placed Manchester United, are certain to win their third Premier League title in four years but must now wait for it to be confirmed.

Pep Guardiola made nine changes from the side that saw off Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final in midweek, with Ederson and Ruben Dias the only players to keep their places.

Chelsea made five changes following their triumph over Real Madrid.

The home side dominated possession in the early stages, with Ferran Torres firing over after a thrust down the right and Benjamin Mendy shooting wide.

Raheem Sterling was booked in the 12th minute after catching Timo Werner with his studs but the punishment could have been worse.

Werner had the ball in the net just after the half-hour but he was well offside and Sterling had a shot at the other end but clear-cut chances were at a premium.

Ziyech tested Ederson in the City goal as the half-time break neared but moments later the home side were ahead.

Gabriel Jesus shrugged off Andreas Christensen to break into the area. He squared, looking for Sergio Aguero. The Argentine’s touch was poor but Sterling was on hand to tuck home.

City should have been 2-0 in first-half stoppage time but Aguero paid the price for attempting a Panenka penalty that was easily saved by Edouard Mendy, drawing the ire of Guardiola.

Jesus won the spot-kick when he was bundled over by Billy Gilmour.

    Chelsea fightback

As the second half wore on the visitors started to establish a foothold and they equalised just after the hour when Rodri lost possession on the halfway line.

Chelsea broke down the right and Cesar Azpilicueta picked out Ziyech just outside the area. The Moroccan drilled a low shot into the bottom corner.

Guardiola threw on Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden for Torres and Aguero as his side went in search of the win.

Chelsea substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi had the ball in the net with about 10 minutes to go but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside.

The finish was frantic. Sterling had a penalty appeal turned down and Alonso then grabbed a last-gasp winner after an assist from Werner.

Tuchel has transformed Chelsea’s fortunes since replacing Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge in January, losing just two matches on his way to the FA Cup final and Champions League final.

Their remaining three league matches are against Arsenal, Leicester — their FA Cup final opponents — and Aston Villa but they will now be strongly fancied to qualify for the Champions League for the third season in a row.

  • Leicester City score 3 goals to sink Newcastle United

Leicester City score 3 goals to sink Newcastle United

Leicester City Football Club striker Ayoze Perez came back to haunt former team Newcastle United on Wednesday, with a goal and an assist for midfielder James Maddison.

His efforts helped the Foxes to ease to a 3-0 victory and cut the gap to runaway 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL) leaders Liverpool.

The win meant that Brendan Rodgers’ second-placed side have 45 points from 21 matches, 10 points behind Liverpool who have two games in hand and host Sheffield United on Thursday.

Leicester made light of Jamie Vardy’s absence due to a calf injury as Perez pounced on a poor pass across the back line from Newcastle United defender Florian Lejeune.

He rode a tackle from Fabian Schar before slotting past Martin Dubravka in the 36th minute.

Lejeune was in the spotlight for the wrong reasons again as his poor clearance found its way to Perez who fed Maddison three minutes later.

The England international blasted in a left-footed shot from distance.

The double blow came shortly after Newcastle United had missed the chance to take the lead through Brazilian forward Joelinton.

He had sprinted onto a pass over the top of the Leicester City defence but failed to beat goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with two attempts.

With Newcastle United reduced to 10 men after using up their three substitutions and Schar unable to play due to injury, Leicester City made it 3-0 in the 87th minute.

  • Arsenal dominate Manchester United in first win for new manager Arteta

Arsenal dominate Manchester United in first win for new manager Arteta

Arsenal earned their first win under new coach Mikel Arteta by comprehensively overpowering a stale Manchester United side 2-0 in the English Premier League (EPL) on Wednesday.

They achieved this with goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis.

Club record-signing Pepe put Arsenal ahead in the 10th minute of their third game under their former player.

He lashed into the net after good work down the left flank from Sead Kolasinac.

Pepe later hit the post in a dominant first-half display from Arsenal, before defender Sokratis deservedly doubled their lead in the 42nd minute.

He pounced on some hesitant defending from the visitors following a corner kick.

Arsenal comfortably saw out their advantage to record a first league win in five games which took them up to 10th in the standings on 27 points after 21 games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side remain fifth on 31 points, after missing out on the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea.

Chelsea drew 1-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion earlier in the day and are five points above Manchester United.

Manchester United were searching for a third consecutive win but were out-fought by Arsenal and rarely looked capable of staging a revival.

Even after Mason Greenwood and Andreas Pereira came on and injected some energy into their attack, they failed to turn it round.(Reuters/NAN)

  • Greenwood strikes again to salvage home draw for Manchester United

Greenwood strikes again to salvage home draw for Manchester United

Youngster Mason Greenwood continued his good run of form as he struck a late equaliser for Manchester United in their 1-1 English Premier League (EPL) home draw with Everton on Sunday.

This was after a Victor Lindelof own goal had put the visitors ahead.

The result left Manchester United sixth in the standings on 25 points from 17 games while Everton dropped to 16th on 18 points.

But it also meant their interim manager Duncan Ferguson stayed unbeaten after his second game in charge.

Former Everton striker Ferguson, who enjoyed a dream debut in last weekend’s 3-1 home win over Chelsea, was pleased with the outcome and his team’s effort.

“I am delighted at the moment. Of course we were winning, but I cannot complain. They came on strong in the second half.

“But I thought we looked good on the counter-attack. The boys were absolutely amazing.

“We beat a top team in Chelsea and now we’ve come to Old Trafford and got a draw,” the Scot  said.

The home side dominated but fell behind and missed a string of chances before 18-year-old Greenwood scored.

He had netted a brace in Manchester United’s 4-0 Europa League win over Dutch side AZ Alkmaar on Thursday, and he levelled with a crisp shot in the 77th minute.

Everton were on the back foot and had goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to thank for keeping Manchester United at bay before they took a 36th minute lead from out of the blue.

Leighton Baines whipped in a teasing corner-kick and the ball cannoned in off the stranded Lindelof.

He was unable to get out of the way after home goalkeeper David De Gea misjudged the set-piece.

The goal was awarded after a quick Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check as Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin had made contact with De Gea in the six-yard box.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not happy with the performance of his team, although he praised academy product Greenwood.

“We’re disappointed we didn’t get three points and we didn’t have the ideas to win it towards the end.

“You shouldn’t concede goals like this at set-plays. But it’s a foul.

“Mason Greenwood is different class in and around the box. You’re not surprised when he scores goals.

“We’ve always had the DNA, with added players from other top clubs, and that will always be the philosophy here,” he said.

Manchester United had come out with all guns blazing as Lingard dragged his shot wide from close range 15 seconds into the game.

Pickford parried a swivelling Rashford free kick and then a stinging low drive from Luke Shaw.

With Rashford and Daniel James misfiring, Manchester United appeared to be running out of steam before Greenwood scored.

After he came on for Lingard in the 65th minute, he teed himself up to beat Pickford with a low shot from inside the penalty area.

Both sides could have grabbed a winner in the closing stages as Pickford kept out another vicious Rashford free-kick before Alex Iwobi had Dea Gea at full stretch at the other end.(Reuters/NAN)
