Fire Erupts At World’s Biggest Vaccine Maker In India

A fire broke out Thursday at India’s Serum Institute, the world’s largest maker of vaccines, but a source said production of the coronavirus vaccine was not affected.

Television channels showed thick clouds of grey smoke billowing from the site in Pune in western India.

The Serum Institute is producing millions of doses of the Covishield coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.

“It is not going to affect production of the Covid-19 vaccine,” a source at the Serum Institute told AFP, adding that the blaze was at a new plant under construction.

An official at the local fire station told AFP that six or seven firetrucks had reached the site.

“We have no other information… on the extent of the fire or whether anyone is trapped,” the official said.

In January, Indian regulators approved two vaccines — Covishield, produced by the Serum Institute, and Covaxin, made by local firm Bharat Biotech.

India began one of the world’s biggest vaccine rollouts on Saturday, aiming to vaccinate 300 million people by July with both Covishield and Covaxin.

Many other countries are relying on the Serum Institute to supply them with the vaccine.

India exported its first batch on Wednesday — to Bhutan and the Maldives — followed by two million doses to Bangladesh and a million to Nepal.

The country plans to offer 20 million doses to its South Asian neighbours, with Latin America, Africa and Central Asia next in line.

Serum Institute, the world’s biggest vaccine maker by volume, also plans to supply 200 million doses to Covax, a World Health Organization-backed effort to procure and distribute inoculations to poor countries.

  • Tragedy: Fire Destroys Multi-million Naira Electronic House In Kogi

Midnight fire destroys multi-million naira electronic shop in Kogi - Daily Post Nigeria

    By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

Barely two days aftermath of Lokoja Petrol Tanker explosion, another tragedy struck in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital on Friday night as a fire outbreak completely razed down a popular multi-million naira electronic House, called ‘Peelinks’.

The sad incident is coming two days after many people were burnt to death, property destroyed in a tanker explosion along Felele – Lokoja – Abuja highway.

Eyewitness accounts told our correspondent on Saturday morning that the electronic shop was gutted by fire at about 11.30 pm on Friday as many residents watched helplessly.

‘Pee Link electronic world LTD’ is said to be the biggest and the best in Lokoja, worths billions of naira was burnt to ashes overnight as there was no firefighter or fire truck to quench the fire.

The magnificent Electronic house which is owned by one business mogul, Peter Onujeme, is located along Muritala Muhammed way, close to GT Bank Junction, Lokoja.

The fire According to an eyewitness might have been caused by an electrical fault which led to a spark but gathered that the office of the Federal Fire Service, is a few meters away from the scene of the incident.

“So this is how somebody’s hard earned investment was completely destroyed by fire and nobody or even the constituted authorities could salvage the situation. What is the function of the State and Federal Fire Service in Kogi State?” Eye witness lamented

What is more worrisome is the absence of the fire services to help out anytime there is a fire occurrence. The recent episode is therefore one too many, (Wednesday – Friday).

“Whenever their services are needed, it is either they come out with one flimsy excuse or the order. Can you imagine, look at the office of the Federal Fire Service, just a stone – throw to this electronic shop and this shop still burnt down completely without any help from them.”
