Arsenal defender, Gabriel Magalhaes tests positive for COVID-19

Arsenal defender, Gabriel  Magalhaes has tested positive for coronavirus and will miss matches with Brighton and West Brom.

The Gunners revealed on Boxing Day that the Brazilian footballer star was self-isolating after a close contact tested positive for the disease, missing the 3-1 home victory over Chelsea.

The 23-year-old, whose test has now returned positive, will now sit out Arsenal’s meetings with Brighton on Tuesday and West Brom on Saturday.

An official club statement said: ‘Gabriel has tested positive for Covid-19 and is isolating according to UK Government and Premier League protocols.

‘We will continue to monitor and support Gabriel, and we are hoping he will be available again after our next two matches.’

Gabriel’s diagnosis was announced after Manchester City’s match with Everton got called off because of an outbreak among City’s squad and playing staff.

Gabriel Magalhaes will miss Arsenal’s next three matches as he is currently self-isolating after coming into close contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus.

The Brazilian centre-back has been a key player for Mikel Arteta’s side this season after joining in a £23.1 million deal from Lille in September.

But Arsenal have been dealt a fresh blow as the 23-year-old has been ruled out of their clash with Chelsea on Boxing Day.

And the self-isolation period means he will also be absent for the Gunners’ Premier League fixtures against Brighton on December 29 and West Brom on January 2.

Arsenal have also confirmed that Willian and David Luiz have both missed the match against Chelsea due to illness, but both Brazilians have tested negative for coronavirus.

‘David and Willian were feeling unwell but they both tested negative but following the protocols we kept them away,’ Arteta said before Arsenal’s clash with Chelsea.

‘With Gabriel has was in touch with someone who tested positive [for Covid-19] so following the protocols as well he needs to be out.

‘It is what it is. In this Covid world this can happen to any team. It has happened to us in a really bad time but that’s the reason we have other players who will jump on to the pitch and fight.’

Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli were both handed surprise starts against Chelsea but Arteta believes the duo fully justify their selection. ‘They play because they deserve to play,’ said the Arsenal manager.

Emile has been training really well. The games that he’s played in the Europa League and the other day when he came on [against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup] he looked really sharp.

‘He gives us something different, he’s got different qualities to every other midfielder. ‘It’s the same with Gabi. He had to come off the other day [against Man City] with a bad kick. But we need him.’

‘Gabriel an absolute steal for Arsenal at £25m’ – Campbell

Gabriel Magalhaes has proved to be an “absolute steal” for Arsenal at £25 million ($33m), says Kevin Campbell, with the Brazilian ticking important boxes for the Gunners as a centre-half “who wants to defend”.

A north London heavyweight has not always found those qualities easy to come by.

Big money has been invested in defenders of international calibre, but few have convinced and been able to plug leaks that have been weighing Arsenal down for some time.

Gabriel, though, has slotted seamlessly into the fold on the back of a summer switch from Lille.

His potential was much sought-after during the last transfer window, with leading sides across Europe ready to test the water, but Emirates Stadium was to be his final landing spot.

Mikel Arteta wasted little time in throwing a new recruit in at the deep end.

Gabriel has swum impressively against the tide, with his presence helping to make Arsenal look considerably more assured at the back.

Campbell believes an immediate return has been offered by a South American enforcer on the investment made in him.

The former Gunners striker is impressed that Arteta was able to do a deal at a relatively low asking price, with it about time that the Premier League giants found themselves a defensive bargain.

“Finally Arsenal have got a centre-back who wants to defend, who likes to defend,” Campbell told Football Insider.

“You see Gabriel back there and he is making the players around him better. That is the sign of a top-class player.

“He is powerful, quick, strong, good on the ball and good in the air – Arsenal stole him for that price!

“That is an absolute steal because he is only going to get better. A very strong player that is only in his 20s. A signing that has hit the ground running straight away.”

Gabriel is just 22 years of age, but has already passed the 100-appearance mark at club level.

Arsenal will be hoping that the Brazilian remains a key part of their plans for many years to come, with a highly-rated talent having been tied to a contract through to 2025 when arriving in English football.
