    BOSG to repatriate 9,800 refugees from Cameroon to Bama and Banki in Borno

    Borno State Government alongside officials of Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, were in Marwa, to repatriate 9,800 refugees of Borno origin, who have voluntarily agreed to return to their ancestral abode.

    The 9,800 Nigerians, who were taking refuge in Minawao camp in Cameroon, constituted the first batch of citizens who showed willingness to return to resettlement houses built by Borno Government in Bama and Banki towns.

    Leader of delegation to a tripartite meeting, GOVERNOR BABAGANA UMARA ZULUM of BORNO state, signed the agreement between Nigeria, Cameroon and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, held in Marwa, Northern Cameroon.


    It was gathered that, the meeting was in line with the provisions of the tripartite agreement which has spelt out international best practices on humanitarian issues involving movements of persons between two or more countries.

    It also identified the roles and limitations of all parties, the protection of the rights of refugees who  have voluntarily agreed to be repatriated at their own will.

    Recall, before traveling to Cameroon, Governor Zulum had series of meetings with Nigeria’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq, the federal commission, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Senator Basheer, as well as relevant ambassadors.



    It was also gathered that the majority of refugees at the Minawao refugee camp, were mostly from Borno State, who have earlier appealed to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum to spearhead their repatriation to  rebuilt communities in Borno in order to return to their ancestral abodes to pick up piece and pieces of their livelihoods.

    The newly appointed Service Chiefs were in Maiduguri the Borno state capital, Sunday, on an operational visit to OPERATION LAFIYA Dole, the epicenter of the theatre of Boko Haram insurgency.

    Government House MAIDUGURI was their first port of call, where they had audience with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum,and assured him of routing out the  Bokoharam insurgency in the state and the Northeast region at large.

    Leader of delegation, Major General Leo Irabor, told the GOVERNOR that, military Operations will receive a boost to enable the security operatives defeat completely the lingering Bokoharam INSURGENCY.

    He solicited for the understanding of the  civilian populace and to co-operate with the military in the fight against bokoharam terrorists.

    BORNO state GOVERNOR BABAGANA UMARA ZULUM, while addressing the service chiefs, he called for aggressive collaboration with the armed forces of Chad, Niger and Cameroon and sought for enhanced ties between military and civilian populace to bridge the trust deficit and increase military access to credible intelligence which is key to the success over bokoharam INSURGENCY.

    He assured the  military top brass of his commitment and support by way of supplementing their efforts in the on going war against Bokoharam terrorists.

    He urged them to tolerate  fair and constructive criticism in good faith to enhance productivity.

    “In democratic  setting, the military is an establishment which is subject to constructive criticism by well meaning citizens” ZULUM said.

    He noted that, for the Nigerian military to achieve success, there should be robust co-ordination and collaboration between different security operatives, particularly between the Nigerian Army and the Airforce.

    The Governor also called on the military to ensure continued and sustained operations to deny insurgents breathing space by blocking all routes to avoid terrorist moving from one region to another.


    The Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Leo Irabor was accompanied on the courtesy visit by the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awal Zubairu Gambo and the chief of the Air Staff Vice Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao.
