Lawmaker, NGO Seek Quick Passage of JAMB Validity Bill

A Federal lawmaker, Tolulope Akande-Sadipe and a NGO, Speak Out Africa, have reinforced the need for the pending bill on the validity of United Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to be made top priority in the 10th Assembly.

This came to the fore during an online seminar, held on Monday, where the Lawmaker argued that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, should not be a revenue generating agency for the government.

She argued further that UTME, supervised by JAMB, should not be an examination that will be conducted every year.

The Lawmaker, who represents Oluyole Federal Constituency reiterated that JAMB should not be assessed on the revenue generated to the coffers of the federal government, rather it should be assessed on the quality of examination they give.

Akande-Sadipe said after laying the amendment on the bill at the floor of the house, and it is passed for an assent by the President, UTME will have a validity of 3 years.

The Bill, according to Akande-Sadipe, seeks to increase the validity of results of UTME from one year to five years. However, it has been reduced to three years.

Making comparison with examinations across the globe, Akande-Sadipe noted that the tenures/validity of other internationally recognized examinations last up to two-five years.

She referred participants to examinations of international standards such as GMAT, GRE, IELTS, TETOFL, SAT, MCAT, PTE, and USMLE.

The Oluyole representative said she is passionate about the bill, adding that many are victims of the JAMB yearly tests.

Akande-Sadipe argued that a student who passes UTME should not sit for the examination repeatedly, rather the result should be valid for about 3 years.

Her words: “I am not asking that the exam tenure be extended in cases where people fail. I am asking that it should be extended when people pass.”

She queried, “In Nigeria, every year you take JAMB and you don’t get into Uni, you have to repeat JAMB. Why?”

She said “168, 613 students scored 200 and above in the 2021 UTME; 236,936 scored 190 and above; 327, 624 scored 180, but less than 100 students got admitted into Tertiary institutions. Of the 600 eligible applicants, only about 100 representing 16.67% of candidates got their admission uploaded on the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).”

“I sponsored the bill, March 16, 2022, on the floor of the House of Representatives, but because of the magnitude of bills that go to the floor of the House, the bill has gotten to the committee level and we are almost there”, she said.

“I pray the bill becomes a reality. If it becomes a reality, it will take away a lot of hardship away from many homes”, she said.

Akande-Sadipe said some of the arguments against the bill include: JAMB is a revenue generating agency; disguised unemployment and the dichotomy between achievement test and aptitude test.

However, she said that UTME should be a test to assess one’s readiness to go to the university, adding that a candidate’s readiness should not change after attempting and passing it, once.

Speaking on behalf of participants, the convener, Speak-out Africa, Ms. Agwu Blessing Newest commended Akande-Sadipe for championing a course that will be of benefit to the less-privileged in the society.

The NGO described Akande-Sadipe as an instrument championing a good course for poor Nigerian students, who have been a victim of yearly JAMB examinations.

Chairman House of Rep C’ttee on Diaspora Calls Out CBN

…urges Nigerians to be Resilient in the Face of Hardship

A female member of the House of Representatives and Chairman House Committee on Diaspora, Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, has called out the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on its policies and failure to supply the new naira notes.

The shortage of available cash in the Nigerian economy, due to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) policy and lack of supply of the new naira notes, has led to immense hardship for the people of Nigeria.

Akande-Sadipe who recently collaborated with a Senatorial candidate in Oyo State to rehabilitate a kilometre stretch of Ayegun-Oleyo road in her constituency, Oluyole, said the fuel scarcity in the country, caused by the smuggling of fuel to neighboring countries has compounded the problem.

She said, CBN has made itself a tool for the opposition and fifth columnists in the All Progressives Congress (APC) who are behind this hardship for political benefits in the upcoming February 2023 elections.

In a recent statement issued by her Media aide, Olusada Olamilekan, Rep. Akande-Sadipe stated, “It is unacceptable for the CBN to leave the citizens of this great nation to suffer because of its lack of foresight and planning, the redesign of Naira is a good initiative but the deadline was not well thought out, and the implementation and procedural policy a major failure. Turning a good initiative into a bad impact on the economy. The CBN must take responsibility for its actions and work to rectify this situation urgently.”

Sadipe also spoke out against the fuel scarcity in the country, stating that the smuggling of fuel creates immeasurable hardship for the people of Nigeria.

“Anyone with the intent to sabotage for political gains does not have the interest of the nation in mind and such behaviour is unacceptable”, Akande-Sadipe stated.

She added, “We will not allow a few individuals to hold this nation hostage for their own selfish interests. The incoming administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu means well for the people of Nigeria. His antecedence and ongoing blueprint as Governor of Lagos speaks for itself”.

Sadipe however sent a message of hope to Nigerians, stating, “We understand the difficulties of today. Please let’s stay calm and remain resilient in the face of these hardships. The end of the tunnel is not far off”.

Earlier on Saturday, she described the projects as the real dividends of democracy.

Speaking with journalists, Akande-Sadipe said: “It is my duty as a Legislator to represent the people; both those who voted me in and those that did not. That’s what I    ’ve been striving to do over the years and I will not stop doing this for the love of my people as it’s not the primary function of a legislator”.

“So far, in Oluyole I have facilitated 188 solar lights, construction of 12 schools and 23 new transformers and 21 boreholes. In fact, if you count from when I was first elected to the House of Representatives, it goes way beyond that.”

“This is the real dividends of democracy. When I was campaigning, I based my campaign on WREEPP and I promised to deliver my service on these pillars. We will continue to do more, it’s just never enough.”

  • Court Declares Akande-Sadipe APC Reps Candidate for Oluyole

Court Declares Akande-Sadipe APC Reps Candidate for Oluyole

The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan on Friday, dismissed a case filed by Hon. Olugbemi Sunbo, against the victory of Rep Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, who emerged as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Oluyole Federal Constituency in May 2022.

Rep. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe won the ticket of the party on 27th May, 2022.

On the 22nd of June, an action was filed by Olugbemi, asking the Presiding Judge, Hon. Justice Uche Nma Agomoh to invalidate the Primaries that declared Tolulope Akande-Sadipe as the winner.

On Friday, December 9th, 2022, the court held that Akande-Sadipe, who represents the constituency, remains the rightful candidate of the APC in Oluyole Federal Constituency.

The suit, Samson OLUSUMBO Olugbemi vs APC & 2 others with Suit no. FHC/IB/CS/109/2022 was dismissed on the grounds that there was no evidence that he won the primaries.

“No evidence of any malpractice in the primary election was established by the plaintiff”, the counsels to Akande-Sadipe and APC, Olawole Abiola and Adeola Adedipe said.

The court inferred that the case was held to be statute barred having been filed over 14 days after the cause of action occurred, which is the APC primary election of 27th of May, 2022 contrary to the provision of the constitution that provides that any action challenging primary election must be filed within 14days of the primary.

The court upheld that the plaintiff does not qualify as an aspirant under the electoral act 2022 having not asserted that he participated in the primary.

Hence, the court ruled that there were no grounds put before it, to nullify the ticket of the party in the custody of Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, having fulfilled all the provisions of the law and complied with stipulated guidelines.

Speaking further, the Counsels said the Presiding Judge struck out the case filed by the appellant, Olasunbo Olugbemi saying it does not have jurisdiction to entertain the plaintiff’s action “because the plaintiff claimed that there was no primary election”.

“The court is only empowered under section 285(14) of the constitution to examine the absence of due process in the conduct of primaries of a political party. However, the plaintiff said there was no primary election. The court rightly declined jurisdiction”.

“The federal high court Ibadan is not the proper forum to commence the action because by the FHC Practice Direction on Pre Elections, 2022. An action must be commenced at Federal high court Abuja where the plaintiff complains against the decision of INEC and APC whose headquarters are both in Abuja”, the counsels said.

Accordingly, the court declared Akande-Sadipe as the validly nominated and authentic candidate of the APC for the Oluyole Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat February 2023 election.

  • Gender Harassment: Deputy Senate President’s Aide, Harasses HoR Member

Gender Harassment: Deputy Senate President’s Aide, Harasses HoR Member

An aide to the Deputy Senate President, Jide Babalola has been detained by men of the Nigeria Police Force for harassing a House of Representatives member, Hon. Tolu Akande-Sadipe at the premises of the National Assembly, Abuja today.

This followed an eyewitness’ account of what transpired between the Deputy Senate President’s aide and the lawmaker in an elevator.

The eyewitness testified that Jide Babalola made advances towards the House of Representatives member, who politely cautioned him not to bump into her in the legislative house’s elevator.

An eyewitness said Mr Jide Babalola, who is fond of harassing people at the National Assembly’s premises because of his portfolio, came into the elevator while Hon. Tolulope Akande Sadipe was in the Elevator. All she said was, “Please don’t step back because you would bump into me”.

“Reacting rudely, Mr. Jide who felt he is superior to a woman and could intimidate a woman rather than replying politely or adjusting his pose, responded in a demeaning manner.

He said demeaning words like “why would you talk to me like that”; “do you know who I am” using provocative insults, and laying claims to being 55 years old and as such could do whatever he wishes to her.

Reacting, the House of Rep member, who also Chairs Committee on Diaspora Affairs, described the incident as unfortunate.

She noted that, as a Representative in Abuja, she had never been this embarrassed before, as Mr. Babalola made a scene from what should have been mutually ironed out by two matured minds.

“We need to speak up against the discrimination of women and harassment women face in Nigeria”, she said.
