AFCON: Iheanacho’s Goal Leads Super Eagles To Victory Over Egypt

The Super Eagles of Nigeria scored a first-half goal to defeat Egypt 1-0 win in their opening African Cup of Nations (AFCON) match at the Roumdé Adjia stadium in Garoua, Cameroon, on Tuesday.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s well taken goal proved the matchwinner as Nigeria recorded its first win over Egypt in the third opening day AFCON meeting between both nations.

Nigeria also made it four wins in nine AFCON matches against Egypt.

The Super Eagles started the better side with direct running on the wings, especially from Moses Simon on the left wing.

Despite the pitch denying both teams zip on the ball, Nigeria adapted better and Simon could only shoot the side netting when played through on goal.

Coach Augustin Eguavoen’s side deservedly went ahead on 30 minutes through Iheanacho. The self-styled Senioman Kelz controlled Aribo’s header before planting a half-volley into the left top corner for his 11th international goal.

Iheanacho and Awoniyi linked up severally in the match, the former finding the later for a shot that was held by goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy as the Eagles went into the break with a deserved lead.

Nigeria again started the better side in the second half, Simon shooting wide before Awoniyi’s header was tipped onto the bar by El Shenawy as Nigeria went in search for a second goal.

The Pharaohs’ double substitutions meant the match became an end-to-end encounter, Salah denied by Maduka Okoye while Kelechi and substitute Chidera Ejuke also went close for the Eagles.

The Eagles backline, however, stifled Carlos Quiroz’s men to claim all three points, going top of Group D while Egypt sank to the bottom.

Nigeria will face Sudan in their second game on Saturday, at the same stadium.

Iheanacho, Ndidi celebrate first FA Cup victory with Nigeria flag

Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi earned English FA Cup glory on Saturday as Leicester City beat Chelsea 1-0 in the competition’s final match at London’s Wembley Stadium.

Youri Tielemans scored a wonder goal and the video assistant referee (then came to the rescue for Leicester City to win the FA Cup for the first time.

It was the first in the club’s 137-year history.

Tielemans fired into the top left corner from some 25 metres out in the 63rd minute in front of a crowd of some 21,000 fans.

They were allowed into the famed arena as coronavirus restrictions are being eased in England.

But victory was not theirs until an 89th-minute equaliser from Chelsea was nullified by VAR because Ben Chilwell was deemed offside by the smallest of margins in the build-up.

It was Leicester City’s first FA Cup trophy after four lost finals in the past, the last one 52 years ago in 1969.

Also, it was their second major title after a sensational Premier League success in 2016.

They also have three League Cup crowns.

Iheanacho helps Leicester City to 2-1 win against Crystal Palace

Leicester City closed in on a UEFA Champions League return after red-hot Kelechi Iheanacho struck again to beat Crystal Palace.

The forward’s late winner —— his 14th goal in 14 games —-clinched a 2-1 victory to leave the Foxes three wins away from booking a top-four spot.

Timothy Castagne had earlier cancelled out Wilfried Zaha’s opener as the Foxes, who sit third in the English Premier League (EPL), were forced to dig deep.

They moved seven points clear of fifth-placed West Ham with five games remaining and tantalisingly close to Europe’s top table.

Inconsistent Crystal Palace, with no immediate threat of relegation, gave the Foxes a fright but are destined to finish in mid-table.

They were immediately on the back foot at the King Power Stadium when Iheanacho’s pinpoint pass found Jamie Vardy, who ran out of room trying to round Vicente Guaita.

The former England striker was also thwarted by Cheikhou Kouyate and fired over inside the first 10 minutes and would have been encouraged by the ease with which he found space.

Yet the Foxes found themselves behind from Crystal Palace’s first attack after 12 minutes.

Christian Benteke left Youri Tielemans in a heap in midfield and Leicester City were suddenly exposed.

Ebere Eze’s inch-perfect pass slipped Zaha in and the forward beat Kasper Schmeichel for his 10th top-flight goal of the season.

A home defeat to Crystal Palace was not in Leicester City’s script as they aim to return to the UEFA Champions League after a four-year absence.

But the early gaps in the Eagles’ defence disappeared as Crystal Palace closed ranks and dished out some thunderous challenges, especially on James Maddison and Iheanacho.

Caglar Soyuncu lashed over but Leicester City were out of sync, missing the spark which has kept them in the top four all season.

Maddison’s shot which went for a throw-in summed up their struggles.

They reached the break behind but their recovery began after just five minutes of the second half.

Tielemans’ ball found Iheanacho and he held off Kouyate to tee up Castagne, who fired in high past Guaita from 10 yards.

Yet the Foxes needed Jonny Evans to keep them level just six minutes later.

Zaha put Jairo Riedewald clean through and he drew Schmeichel before passing across to Benteke – only for Evans’ brilliant last-ditch tackle to deny the striker a tap-in.

Leicester City, though, began to regain some swagger.

Maddison and Vardy shot at Guaita, while Vardy’s celebrations were quickly cut short by an offside flag after he turned in with 20 minutes left.

Just before, Benteke headed Eze’s corner-kick straight at Schmeichel.

But Vardy went closer to a winner 13 minutes from time when he swapped passes with Iheanacho and fired across goal.

Tielemans shot wide but Leicester City finally got the winner they had threatened with 10 minutes left.

Almost inevitably it was in-form Iheanacho.

When the striker collected Evans’ deep pass, he held off Patrick Van Aanholt, cut inside Scott Dann and lashed into the roof of the net
