UK Govt. makes U-turn, Designates IPOB as Terrorist Group Excluded from Asylum

    By Dauda R Pam Maiduguri

The United Kingdom government has finally accepted Nigeria’s classification of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation.

Following widespread killings and acts of lawlessness, the Nigerian government designated IPOB a terrorist group in 2017.

But some foreign countries, including UK, which IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, holds its passport, did not acknowledge the declaration at the time.

However, four days after the outlawed group beheaded an army couple, who were on their way to Imo State for their traditional wedding, UK acknowledged IPOB as a terrorist organisation, directing that it should be excluded from its asylum programme.

Although the killing, which sparked nationwide outrage, was not among the atrocities of the Nnamdi Kanu-led terror group the UK listed in its policy review document, the action was taken a few days after the murder.

The acts of the terrorist group listed by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), a division of the British Home Office, were the invasion of an All Progressives Congress (APC) meeting in Enugu state where a party chieftain was killed; attack on an Imo Police Station where an officer was killed; killing of Anambra residents during enforcement of ”sit-at-home” order; killing of some policemen en route to Anambra International Airport, among others.

All these attacks happened in January 2022 alone.

Last year, UKVI had released new guidelines to its decision makers on how to consider and grant asylum applications to IPOB.

But in a fresh update published on its website three days ago, UKVI made a U-turn.

“IPOB is proscribed as a terrorist group by the Nigerian government, and members of the group and its paramilitary wing – the Eastern Security Network (created in December 2020) – have reportedly committed human rights violations in Nigeria,” UKVI said in its policy notes.

“MASSOB has been banned, but is not a proscribed terrorist group in Nigeria. It too has reportedly been involved in violent clashes with the authorities.

“If a person has been involved with IPOB (and/or an affiliated group), MASSOB or any other ‘Biafran’ group that incites or uses violence to achieve its aims, decision makers must consider whether one (or more) of the exclusion clauses under the Refugee Convention is applicable.

“Persons who commit human rights violations must not be granted asylum.”

The policy directed that decision makers must also check if there has been a previous application for a UK visa or another form of leave, noting that asylum applications matched to visas should be investigated before the asylum interview.

According to the British government, establishing a convention reason is not sufficient to be recognised as a refugee.

“The question is whether the particular person has a well-founded fear of persecution on account of their actual or imputed convention reason,” it added.

For an asylum application to succeed, it said the decision-makers must consider each case on its facts, taking into account the legal status, profile, size, and organisation of the group/organisation to which the person belongs and its activities; whether a person in the UK would wish to continue their activism if returned to Nigeria (if not, why not) and whether the group/organisation has a presence in Nigeria as well as outside of the country and any evidence that it is being monitored by the government.

Other considerations include the person’s profile and political activities (including those online) and relevant documentary or other evidence; the profile and activities of family members; past treatment of the person, and evidence that their activities in the UK may have come to the attention of the Nigerian security agencies.

Biafra: DSS feeds Nnamdi Kanu once a day – Lawyer Ejiofor alleges

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, lawyer of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has accused the Department of State Services, DSS, of starving the Biafra agitator.

Ejiofor said DSS has not allowed Kanu to eat more than once a day.

He disclosed this to journalists in Owerri, Imo State, on Friday after his routine visit with Kanu at DSS headquarters in Abuja.

Ejiofor lamented that the IPOB’s leader was getting worse due to the refusal of the DSS, to allow him to change his clothes despite repeated court orders to do so.

Ejiofor said: “We were also reliably informed by Onyendu that his meals are no longer served regularly. Onyendu barely eats once a day, and this situation is not helping his deteriorating medical condition.

“The lawless DSS personnel have remained adamant with how they treat Court orders with levity and disdain, which is unacceptable as no one is above the law anywhere in the world.

“Be assured UmuChineke that we, in the legal team are not resting on our oars towards ensuring that these infractions are addressed with immediate effect.”

IPOB: Nnamdi Kanu Urges Supporters to Pray for him Ahead of Court Case

Ahead of the ruling of Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court in Abuja challenging the competence of the treason charges filed against him by the Federal Government, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has called on his supporters to remain strong in prayers as the day approaches.

He also expressed firmness in his disposition and strong in his conviction that he would get justice that day.

Kanu’s lawyer and human rights activist, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, said these in a statement issued on Monday night after their meeting in the custody of the Department of State Services.

He said, “Our court-ordered routine visit to our indefatigable client, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was undertaken today (Monday).

“The cardinal subject forming the fulcrum of our discussion centred on our final strategy towards handling the outcome of the anticipated ruling, come Friday, on our application challenging the competence of the charge.

“Our expectations within the precincts of enabling laws were noted and taken cognisance of.

“Onyendu is eminently ready for Friday’s ruling. He is firm in his disposition and strong in his conviction.

“Chukwuokike Abiama will take absolute control come April 8, 2022, and we expect justice to be manifestly seen to have been done at the end of the proceedings.

“Be assured that there will be light at the end of the tunnel. Onyendu’s freedom will happen soon. It is forward ever and backward never!

“Onyendu requested millions of his followers, supporters and Ezigbo Umuchineke to remain strong in prayers, particularly as this special day approaches. You all should remain resolute in the belief that Onyendu will emerge victorious in no distant time.

“Onyendu is enthused over the conduct of Ezigbo Umuchineke, and urges you all to keep up the good work. Thank you all and remain hugely blessed, Ezigbo Umuchineke.”

  • Biafra: Why IPOB became terrorist organization – Okorocha

Biafra: Why IPOB became terrorist organization – Okorocha

An All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential aspirant, Rochas Okorocha has suggested why members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, became terrorists.

Okorocha explained that IPOB became a terrorist group because it was not properly handled by the government.

The former governor of Imo State spoke while addressing State House Correspondents after his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday.

Okorocha said he, however, sees IPOB members as poorly educated children and not terrorists.

According to Okorocha: “There was no need to have handled the IPOB matter the way it was handled. Today they have turned out to be terrorists.

“But for me, I don’t see them as terrorists. I see them as children who have not been properly educated on the happenings.”

Members of IPOB have been agitating for the actualization of Biafra in the Southeast.

Their agitation led to the arrest of the group’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu is facing terrorism charges before an Abuja Federal High Court.

The charges were brought against him by the Nigerian Government.

IPOB to Okorocha: You’re hypocrite, selfish political fraudster

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has attacked former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, calling him a hypocrite and a selfish political fraudster.

IPOB, in a statement issued by its spokesman, Emma Powerful on Wednesday said the attention of the group had been drawn to the laughable, disgraceful and unguarded statements coming from Okorocha claiming how IPOB operated and convinced youths in the region.

It said Okorocha tried everything he could as governor of Imo State to stop IPOB which he failed and that now he had started dancing like a mad man by including IPOB in his infamous statement he was using to deceive the gullible minds in the state thinking he could be allowed to use IPOB for political gains.

“Okorocha was one of the most unfortunate things that have happened to Imo State. His infamous administration as Imo governor is better forgotten. Nigerians know him for whom he is; a hypocrite and selfish political fraudster. He should not play his evil politics close to IPOB.

“Okorocha collected many lands belonging to the people of Imo State by force, converted same into his personal property because he was running Imo State as a private estate,” IPOB said.
The group added that his atrocities in Imo State were pursuing him and his families, including his son-in-law Uche Nwosu as he could not advise his father in law to allow people their ancestral lands and homes.

“These will continue to hunt them till eternity
“Okorocha started this ranting during the jamboree declaration he did in Abuja and mentioned IPOB to appeal to his gullible audience. Since he has decided to use IPOB as a campaign slogan, let him prepare well!

“Okorocha arrested our women in Imo State thinking he can break the spirit of IPOB followers. The present administration in Imo State collected people’s lands he took from them by force and handed back to the owners since then Okorocha hasn’t been himself.

He started sponsoring unknown gunmen and cannibalism in the entire region but we will soon expose him,” the group alleged

  • IPOB leadership sold out ESN which resulted to the death of 9 operatives in Imo — Simon Ekpa

IPOB leadership sold out ESN which resulted to the death of 9 operatives in Imo — Simon Ekpa

Self-styled autopilot and disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, Simon Ekpa has accused the leadership of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) of snitching against the Eastern Security Network (ESN), which resulted to the brutal death of its nine operatives in Imo State.

The Finland based activist in a series of statements via his official Facebook page said the Directorate Of State of IPOB which is the highest decision making body of the movement cannot longer be trusted by the people.

Ekpa who however vowed to fight what he described as pigs and criminals sabotaging the effort of Nnamdi Kanu said that the DOS divulged important information about Eastern Security Network to the security agencies.

He said, “Chinasa Nworu and DOS succeeded in snitching against ESN in Imo state leading to the death of 9 ESN personnel few days ago.”

Meanwhile, NewsBand on the 14 of January exclusively reported how Simon Ekpa boxed the leadership of the Indigenous People Of Biafra to a very helpless corner and assume complete control of group’s structure.

Confirming NewsBand report, Ekpa in a statement said that “The ESN no longer take order from the criminals in DOS”.

IPOB: Nnamdi Kanu Must Face Justice

    ….Igbo Group Tells Buhari

Foremost socio – cultural group , The Igbo Diaspora Think-Tank has dissociated itself from calls from some Igbo leaders clamouring for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, suggesting a total support of IPOB atrocities on the N’digbo and Nigeria as a nation.

The Igbo think- Tank in a statement on Sunday said it was deeply concerned that people who are victims of the carnage done to the south east region and the country would contemplate such a blind and unpatriotic narrative and worsestill take it to the presidency.

Reacting to posers on telephone for further comments, vice president of the group Chief Chidi Anayo noted that N’digbo can now see that Nnamdi Kanu was not alone in his fight against the Nigerian entity ; which fight ultimately had given a bigger blow to the south east region.

“We can not sit here and watch away while our leaders are blackmailed and intimidated into emergency envoys to the presidential Villa with requests that no democratically elected president could consider” Mr president Buhari would be exposing the whole country to untold danger if he dares consider the release of Nnamdi Kanu without a full and proper trial”

The group said rather than call for Kanu’s release ,we had expected the so called Igbo leaders to advise on an open and transparent trial of their son who from all indications was on a lone mission.

“We commend governors who stood their ground in defiance of IPOB senseless outings regardless of political and personal gains”

” As we recover from the human , infrastructural and economic losses brought upon us by IPOB and their leader, it is expected that our leaders would seek total reconstruction of the region by the federal government instead of seek the release of a man who does not recognize “Nigeria” and her leadership.

Is it not an irony for Nnamdi Kanu who said Mr president was ‘dead’ and that Nigeria was a ‘zoo’ to benefit from the benevolence of the same president while breaching the principle of sepperation of powers ?
Why not urge their son to show remorse and act better in future ? What has IPOB and their leader done to anyone for their sins against N’digbo and the Nigerian state? What becomes of the Nigerian sovereignty if leaders could rally round criminals to wage wars against the state ? Is Nnamdi Kanu by virtue of his disruptive capacity more than the law? How could anyone arm twist the president into breaking the law at the expense of law abiding citizens?

The group said indeed , Nigeria would become a ‘zoo’ if Mr president had considered a political solution over a fair, full and open trial of Nnamdi Kanu.

“We also want to say that theirs no true Igbo son that is happy with the activities of IPOB all over the world ” they are genetically disruptive . They are a violent organisation anywhere in the world.

“Look at how Nnamdi Kanu mobilised her members to manhandle Sen Eke Ekweremadu in Germany” Look at how much destruction they cause just within the time their leader jumped bail”
On what terms exactly would any sane and true Igbo son seek for Kanu’s release without trial ?

The group further summarised the attocities by IPOB within a short period calling on the authorities to stand on the path of the people at all times

.Abia: Between January 26 and April 19, 2021, six policemen were killed while property worth huge sums were destroyed by IPOB members in coordinated attacks at Uratta junction, Aba North LGA; Omoba Police Station, Isiale-Ngwa South LGA; Abriba Community in Ohafia LGA, and Uzuakoli Police Station in Bende LGA.

Rivers: On April 17, 2021, IPOB operatives killed an NSCDC operative on guard duty at Shell crude oil manifold in Elelewon village in Obio/Akpor LGA and injured many others.

  • High Court grants Nnamdi Kanu 3 days to battle fresh Bail, Terrorism charges

High Court grants Nnamdi Kanu 3 days to battle fresh Bail, Terrorism charges

The federal high court in Abuja has granted the self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu three days to present his case for fresh bail and to challenge the competence of the fresh terrorism charges brought against him by the federal government.

A 7-count terrorism charge was on Thursday, October 21, 2021, slammed on Kanu in which he pleaded not guilty and opted to challenge the validity of the alleged heinous crimes.

A hearing notice issued by the federal high court for the determination of the two motions filed by Kanu and sighted by DAILY POST on Sunday indicated that three days have been earmarked for the matter.

The hearing notice served on the federal government through the Federal Ministry of Justice and to Kanu through his lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor fixed January 18, 19 and 20, 2022 consecutively for the disposal of the two motions.

Nnamdi Kanu is also expected to use the three days to challenge the court’s jurisdiction to try him on the terrorism charge on the grounds that the alleged offences were committed in the United Kingdom and not in Nigeria.

His lawyer, Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor confirmed to DAILY POST that the hearing notice has been served on him and that the legal team is fully prepared for the task before Justice Binta Nyako.

Kanu was in June 2021 re-arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria to face trial and had since been confined to the detention facility of the Department of the State Service DSS in Abuja on the order of the court.

He was first arrested in a Lagos hotel in 2015 by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) and was arraigned alongside four others in 2016.

Among others, Kanu is objecting to the charge on the grounds that it did not in any way link him with the offence and that the alleged offences were even committed in the United Kingdom.

  • Nnamdi Kanu: IPOB announces no sit-at-home as court delivers judgment

Nnamdi Kanu: IPOB announces no sit-at-home as court delivers judgment

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said there will be no sit-at-home across the Southeast on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

IPOB relaxed the sit-at-home due to the scheduled judgment of the High Court sitting in Abia State.

The court will on Wednesday rule on Kanu’s fundamental rights suit.

However, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, however, limited the sit-at-home order to Tuesday, when Kanu will appear before Justice Binta Nyako of an Abuja Federal High Court.

Powerful explained that the decision was to allow people of the Southeast go about their lawful business as the court rules on Kanu’s fundamental right suit.

In a statement he issued on Saturday, Powerful said: “We are the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB under the command of our indefatigable Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Following our Leader’s upcoming court proceedings on the 18th, 19th and 20th of January 2022 next week, we wish to remind Biafrans that there will be only sit at home on 18th of January, and not 19th and 20th of January. In keeping with our avowed solidarity with our Leader, the entire Biafra land will be on lock down only on January 18 for obvious reasons.

“Biafrans should understand that 19th January is the judgment day in the suit by our Leader against the Federal Government which is pending before an Umuahia High Court. So, there will be no sit-at-home on that day.

“Again, we don’t want to compound the pains of our people, hence, we will limit the sit-at-home to only January 18. Biafrans and residents of Biafra are free to go about their businesses without molestations on 19th and 20th January. Anybody found enforcing non-existent Monday sit-at-home on 17th, 19th and 20th is criminal and must treat as such, IPOB leadership have given order and that order is what signed.

“Everybody must be careful because this waves that is coming will consume many and every principal of IPOB mostly the coordinators must know that it will bounce on their heads if they don’t checkmate the activities of members and call them to order. IPOB is not village or social club where everybody will behave untoward to people like cultists.

“It is on the table and to the knowledge of IPOB leadership how some principal officers were encouraging evils in IPOB without minding the repercussions and consequences but we want to make categorically known to them that it will come back to him or her that encouraged evil against his or her fellow human beings

“For clarity sake, we reiterate that there will be no sit-at-home on January 19th and 20th. Nobody is expected to interfere with either human or vehicular movements in those days under any guise. Any detractor or agent of darkness caught obstructing peoples activities in Biafra land on January 19th and 20th in the name of enforcing sit-at-home will regret his or her actions.”

Powerful disclosed that anybody seen enforcing sit-at-home on those days mentioned were not members of IPOB.

“Anybody issuing order for sit at home on 19th and 20th of January is not a member of IPOB. Such persons are working against the interest of our leader and the entire struggle for independence. They should be disregarded.

“For the umpteenth time, IPOB is under one Central command and Control , and doesn’t have parallel or factional leadership. The Directorate of State (DOS) under the command of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is in charge of the global movement of IPOB.

“Anybody who is not loyal to DOS is an impostor and should be disregarded.

“We expect our people everywhere to adhere to this directive and refuse to be misled by sacked members of IPOB in Europe and America. IPOB remains unshakeable, built and rooted on the rock and will remain so until the freedom for Biafra is fully achieved,” he added.

IPOB bans Fulani cows in Southeast, says only Igbo cows are allowed

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Monday said cows reared by Fulani herdsmen would no longer be used for any social event in the Southest, as native cows reared by the Igbos will only be used

The group stated this in a New Year address by its Head of Directorate Mazi Chika Edoziem through its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful.

The ban, IPOB said, would take effect from April.

It said only native cows would be allowed in the region for such events.

It urged the traditional leaders, to ensure to pass message to the grassroots

The group said the ban place on Fulani cows will take effect on Apil 2022

“Effective that month, Fulani cows will not be used for any social or ceremonial events and festival in Biafraland.

“Our native cows will be used instead for these events.

“Traditional custodians of our culture, the clergy and town unions must ensure that this message gets to the grassroots.”
