    KILLINGS:Where are Northern elders?

    BY EMMANUEL ONWUBIKO

Nigerians must reinvent their collective sense of national outrage so we can know that we are actually a part of the comity of nations and same as the rest of the human race.

I am beginning this essay in the aforementioned format because it is abundantly evident that the killings of citizens by terrorists and other armed non- state actors have made millions of Nigerians to lose their sense of righteous indignation and collective outrage especially in the face of the affront to our common humanity by those who kill in small and large numbers.

Another sociological impact of the serial killings of citizens in Nigeria by terrorists is the erosion of the tested and trusted cultural value systems we once held so dear here.

Those who are the conflicts entrepreneurs and are actively engaged in carrying out mass execution of innocent Nigerians are part of one community or the other in Nigeria and those who carry out these terrorist attacks in the North are from the northern communities.

Terrorists are not ghosts or spirits. The other day some Northern Women were arrested for hiring their daughters to the terror gangs in the forests for sexial gratification.  Many members of different Northern communities have been arrested but not charged after police parade of supplying logistics and foods to terrorists.

A particular man in Kaduna got picked up by the police for allegedly being the one baking breads for terrorists in different forests in the North West. There have been lots of publicly announced arrests of women supplying guns and petrol to terrorists in the North.

There are also informants who provide actionable intelligence to terrorists which are used by these agents of death to carry out mass killings of individuals in those same communities whereby these informants are born and bred. So terrorists have collaborators amongst their kits and kins.

Terrorists do not fall from outer space. These communities have sets of social, cultural and religious values and norms and these communities are peopled by amongst others the elders who are the natural leaders.

    By Muhammad Goronyo, Sokoto

Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi Gumbi has called on Federal and state governments to as matter of urgency intervene in the incessant Killings of Nigerian Citizens especially in this part of north western part of the country.
Gumbi who is the former staff of Internal Affairs Ministry and Sokoto state gubernatorial aspirant says too many Killings, kidnappings, rapes and rustlings occurred within the last two weeks.
He said hundreds of farmers also abandoned their farm produce in fear of being killed, kidnapped or tormented by bandits while trying to get what they can feed their families and settle day to day problems.
“Neither farmers nor rearers move to distant bushes with settled minds, no one is comfortable outside there”, he averred.
This is something Federal government can control considering the strength and power of the Nigerian security agencies, he said.

12 officers charged in killing of 19 migrants near US-Mexico border

The Tamaulipas state police are accused of murder, abuse of power and making false statements.

Twelve police officers have been arrested in Mexico following the discovery of 19 charred corpses near the U.S. border, Tamaulipas Attorney General, Irving Barrios, said on Tuesday.

The Tamaulipas state police are accused of murder, abuse of power and making false statements.

The bodies were discovered on January 22 in a burned-out pickup truck next to other burned cars in the town of Santa Anita in north-eastern Mexico.

The people had been shot dead, according to media reports.

Among them, according to Barrios, were migrants from Guatemala.

Media had reported that almost all of the victims were Guatemalans.

Tens of thousands of Central Americans every month flee poverty and violence in their homeland to seek a better life in the U.S.

One of the four dead identified so far was a Mexican migrant smuggler, according to Mr Barrios.

The possible involvement of other police officers, as well as criminal groups smuggling Central American migrants into the U.S. and fighting for control of the region, is still under investigation, Barrios said.

Killings: Plateau youths urge FG to secure federal highways

Leader of the group, Mr John Baling, made the call at a candle light procession on Sunday in Jos.

The youths organised the procession in honour of Dalep Dachiya, a 200 Level student of the University of Maiduguri, who was murdered by members of an insurgent group.

Dachiya was abducted on Jan. 9, on his way to Maiduguri to resume school, and was later killed by his abductors.

Baling also called on the government and the security agencies to step-up their game and end insurgency and all forms of criminality in the country.

The leader advised government to seek external support from international communities to end insurgency in the country.

“As Plateau youths, we are disturbed by the escalating state of insecurity and wish to bare our concerns on the state of insecurity in the country.

“The Federal Government should take urgent steps to secure federal roads and communities in the country, particularly those within the North-East.

“International assistance should be solicited in improving security in the country with special consideration given to securing travelers on our highways.

“We call on the Federal Government and security agencies to rise to the challenges by upholding their sacred oaths to defend and protect the lives of citizens as well as the territorial integrity of the country,” he called.

Baling urged government to take threats by Boko Haram and other armed groups seriously, urging that proactive measures be put in place to secure lives of Plateau citizens and other Nigerians in the North-East.

He also called on security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of Miss Lilian Gyang and Bashiru Abdulhamid who were abducted by members of the sect recently. (NAN)
